When i got this motor it came with the controls mounted in the boat but there was no key switch for the electric start, There is a Plug on the bottom of the motor just in front of the gear selector. I did locate the part to plug into this but I cant afford it. So here is what i have done so far... Please don't get angry I got a feeling its WAY wrong. All of the wires on the inside of the plug have been cut off so there was nothing for me to trace. I connected a wire from the (+) on the battery to a switch to the (+) on the starter, and then (-) from the Battery to the Ground on the motor. Tried to start it and all it did was blow the 25A inline fuse. What did I forget to connect or did I just do something really stupid?? Any Help on getting this wired up would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

you will need "heavy" wire for the starter. 25 amps ain't gona turn it. battery cable from + to heavy post on a solenoid then the other heavy post to the starter. battery cable from - to the engine. smaller wire from + to a push button (normal open) switch then to small post on solenoid. small wire from the other small post on the solenoid to - on the battery.

Or for a test use jumper cables - to engine block + to starter post (make this connection last as sparks at the battery are not a good thing)hook the cables to the battery first then to the block and hold the + to the post on the starter (there will be a spark.

For me, a picture's worth a thousand words. Here's a drawing of typical start circuit, courtesy of another iboats member, Xcusme. A push-button switch can be used instead of the ignition switch shown. A 20 amp fuse would work where needed.
I did the test with the jumper cables and the starter jumped up to the flywheel but didn't crank over. This is a brand new battery and is fully charged. Boatbouy, Thanks for the wiring Diagram... I don't have a solenoid on the motor anywhere, Will this cause a problem?

This is a brand new battery and is fully charged.

That sounds like either the starter needs repair or the battery is not putting out what you would expect (defective or not fully charged).

I don't have a solenoid on the motor anywhere, Will this cause a problem?

Not having a solenoid will require you to jump the battery to the starter each time you want to start it - quite inconvenient. The '59's (I think) had the solenoid in a metal box attached to the transom. They're usually on ebay or maybe you could get one from your local boat junkyard.

BoatBuoy is correct they were on the transom in an external box, if you can'tfind one you may be creative enuf to put one under the cowl. Wires the same where ever you put it.

The Engine FAQ on starting gives troubleshooting procedures, Timbit.
