Took this 14' boat out for first time and it ran well both forward and reverse. Within 30 minutes our forward speed dropped regardless of engine speed. It seemed to happen after we started to open the throttle up about half way. Took a lunch break started back up and could only go at trolling speed, so we trolled :D . When we came about into the wind all we could do is stand still or turn around. Power head seems to run well. After an hour we gave up, drifted to shore and got a tow  . That was two days ago. Today I pulled the prop and drive pin was intact. This motor has a prop clutch but I don't know how to test it. There were two small holes on the starboard side of the gearcase that were oozing a small amount of tan grease  . One hole was the middle hole of three holes by the screws conecting the gearcase to exhaust tube. The other hole was a single hole above the prop on the topside of the gearcase and bearing assembly. Any suggestions on how I should proceed  ?

Sure sounds like a spun prop. You can verify it by making a mark across the hub and onto the propeller. Then rev it up in water. If the marks no longer align, the prop is spun.
As for those holes, they all lead into the open area of the foot, including that one right above the gearcase. Actually, I'm a little surprised it's not plugged. They're there to allow water to drain out of crevices in the foot. So probably you were just looking at unburnt oil from the exahust.
If your at all worried, drain & replace a bit of L/U oil to see what it looks like.

Thanks Paul,

I took the prop in and it had been spun. The L/U oil looked good. The boat came with a spare prop so I marked it and will test it next time out. You mentioned that you were surprised the holes were not plugged. I assume they are not supposed to be plugged but become plugged up over time. Is that correct?
