ok... if you've read my past postings about this motor, I've since taken it out a few more times, got it idling nicely, starting the first pull, etc, doing great.. but all the sudden it started rattling. I found out it was the screws for the pull start, and took it off, as I've got a battery to start it now. Well, then.. it starts having trouble shifting into reverse. I found that I had the cable adjusted wrong, and fixed that, but then, it starts having trouble staying in forward gear. I"m like huh? what the? So.. I look at it with the cover off, staring, and found that the gear select lever, has a screw holding it together, and it's come loose. So I tighten it with a lil threadlocker, and thought it'd be fine the next day. NOPE. Goes into reverse fine, away from the dock, goes into gear fine in drive, and then pops right outta gear. I hold the lever down into forward, and it tries to pop out again, over and over it keeps trying to pop out almost in a rhythm. So... I wrestle it back to the dock, and bring her home. Screw holding the gear select lever is still fine, but it just won't stay in gear.

Any suggestions?
or is this thing toast ??? ( I hope not)

Doesn't sound good. Remove the cable and try it again to be sure it's not the cable. If it still does it it is your clutch dog in the LU and it and maybe the forward gear will need replacing.

Im with SAMO, sounds like the clutch dog is toast.Good thing is this is a dealer item,or at least should be as i just got one for a 1956 30 hp johnny right from the dealer. If your the least bit mech inclined this is an easy fix.Istrongly recommend a good manual so you dont lose or misplace lower unit parts.

might be the clutch dog, but I would first check the linkage. There are adjustments on the screw you tightened down. It may just not be going into gear all the way. Kinda sounds like it to me.

oye.... that doesn't sound good. I'll check the adjustment type screw, and the cable first. but I think, with my luck, it'll be something real fun and expensive to fix :)
