ok, so I got a 59 johnson super seahorse 35, I have been following the awakening a old engine, the first problem I had was cooling, I have replaced the impellor and seals in the lower leg, I opened up the top part that holds the thermostat, (well there wasnt one), I ordered in a new thermostat and a manual, thermostat showed up but manual is a couple weeks behind, can someone give me the correct configuration (even a diagram would be great) of the way the spring, grommit, seal are installed below the thermostat and the thermostat seat, I tried it with the spring with the plastic piece attached down and the grommit on top below the thermostat cup but it seems to be getting hot still, mabey I am just paranoid and it is suppose to be this hot, I just hate the thought of all this time and money and ending up with a fancy anchor>

after reading some other threads, do you think it could be the barrel is not deep enough and not submurging the water pump enough?

Re: 59 Johnson not so

can anyone tell me the order that the thermostat goes in, there is a washer in the bottom, and then the spring with the ball goes in, ball down I am assuming, and then the grommit on the top, after this is in should be the thermostat seat and thermostat<<< is this correct, any help would be great,

I can't begin to answer your question, [I build my own auto engines, and I still forget about the thermostat stack sometimes]. Please don't take this the wrong way, computers are dumb machines that don't have the ability to tell from context what we mean, even if we spell something wrong, like real humans can. So, if you decide to use the search function here or in google, you might have more luck if you use the correct spelling, "grommet", with an "e". Better yet, I hope you already solved your problem.
