59 merc 80hp starter ?

I'm have a problem with the gear on the starter popping up a engaging the fly-wheel. It was working until I re-wired the ignition. I tried starting the motor and sometimes it will pop up and turn the fly-wheel and than it wont. Any answers please anyone?

Sounds like a bad connection in the rewire job.

When it doesn't, is the starter motor runnning? Do you get a click from the solenoid?

The starter run and will engage at first then it wont engage. Could the battery need charged or could it be somethign else?

Should you hear the solenoid when you turn the ignition on? I tried it yesterday and it engaged the fly-wheel at first, the it wouldn't. A friend said to charge the battery. They said it takes alot of ppower to turn a merc over. Can I hook jumper cables to the battery from my truck?

yes the starter is running when it is not engaged.
