Re: 59 rude 10hp thermostat location...

Still havin heat issues with my 10 horse rude....
I took my boat out for the first time this year, she trolled for 10 minutes, overheated, and shut off. I tore it down, the impeller was mint, (weird) and I replaced the thermostat...still runs for ten, then over heats... I just noticed the low speed needle adjustment doesn't seem to do much...lean starve?
The fuel is new, 5 oz of oil per 3 gal of gas, plus a bit of lead substitute.. pressure tank is working.
anyone?
Thanks,
Pat

That is nowhere near the correct fuel mix for that motor. It should be 24:1, that is a quart of oil to 6 gallons, or a pint of oil to 3 gallons. Lead substitute is entirely unnecessary. Outboards don't need lead anyway. In the "olden days" people would go out of their way to find "marine white" gas (unleaded).

Excuse my ignorance of the imperial system, but isn't 5 oz to 3 gallons closer to 100:1?

My error, I used 5oz of lead for 3 gallons...but now that I think of it, I cannot
remember if I mixed 50:1 or 25:1....I'll recycle the fuel start over, and re-post
Thanks again,
Pat:confused:

"Impeller was mint...."
Hmmm.....is the impeller's key (or pin) installed?
Maybe it's not even turning.

So are you sure it actually overheated? When it died did you sprinkle water on the rear of the powerhead and did it sizzle off? Or can you not keep you hand on the head for three seconds or so? Was it siezed when it died? or was there no compression? Do you have water coming from the exhaust relief hole in the back of the leg when it was running?? And if so is it hot/warm? Or is it ice cold?

I'm wondering if you're having ignition problems due to a questionable coil or something along those lines. I just have a hard time imagining it overheating to the point where it dies and will not restart more than once or twice without it being toast. Good luck!

Cheers..............Todd

OK, lol... Pin is in Impeller, was some scoring on the outside edges of the peller, inside the case has shine marks...no actual knowledge though...
I am sure it overheated, engine pitch changed power loss, so I idled it to zero and it shut off..I pulled the rope a few times, and it was tough, but not seized...I will look at it in the morning. A pee hole would be a huge help...

just got finished with a 33 evinrude that after installing new impeller still over heated/did not pump water out the rear port.BEFORE installing impeller make sure you use a sealer on the impeller housing ,it will make a world of diff!!!Me i used avation gasket sealer/maker ,looks like dark brown goop and works great.Ithink its made by permatex. You should see a nice mist of water coming out of the back of the motor from the port just below the powerhad if that 10 is anything like my 33 (1970) or 18(1957).

OIC....that could b...the lower unit oil was fouled....did ya dig the lower half of the casing out of the lower unit and seal it to the lower unit itself, or just the case halves together? And what about the restrictor plate? Both sides of that I figure? There was no trace of sealant when I tore it down, so I opted not to use any on re-assembly. (And when I say it overheats, I am monitoring the head temp with a pyrometer, thats why I haven"t nuked it yet)

Should add this post to the blunders column, removed the water pump upper housing, impeller, shaft, went to gently pry up on the lower half....and promptly cracked it at the base of the bushing...(it was leaking water into the lower unit though.....)
I always wondered why I never saw more of these older rigs on the pond...
now as August wanes on and I am tinkering instead of fishin, I'm starting to get the idea.
