Time to consult all the experts out there.

I have a 59 Scott McCulloch 40hp that is totally confusing me. I have replaced the impellers (2 on this pump) yet no water is coming out the side port. Water is coming out the port below the anticavitation plate.

Is there a thermostat or poppet valve somewhere, I cant find either.

Also ordered new seal kit for lower unit, changed the oil, and oil leaks out the 2 small pin holes in the housing. No idea what the pin holes are for.

Anyone with any ideas on these problems, I would sure appreciate some input.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 40 HP also, when I got it the water impeller was toast. I had to pull the lower end and the power head also to clean out all the passages.

The ports/passages around the power head were blocked with bits of the old impeller fingers that broke off, and were carried into all the water passages, when they entered the hottest areas of power head they melted and blocked off water flow completely...The guy I bought it from said it just stalled and alot of "white smoke" came out of engine....I think he ment steam LOL.

Anyways...pull the power head (engine) out, after the lower end is disconnected. You will see a flat metal screen type filter (under the power head) before the water enters the power head water passages....most likely clogged, once the power head is off, I would try using compressed air to clean out passages...just dont go too high with the compressed air. Also watch out for the gaskets and gromets around the power head and the water delivery tubes (easy to loose/damage), if they are damaged or cracked you might be loosing water at these points.
Good luck....If you run into bigger problems my 40 HP is forsale....it has a brand new water pump in it. ;)

The upper pump is the bailer, lower cooling. I assume the port below is the intake for cooling.Thermostat appears to be in the upper part of the cylinder cover.
trubleshtr suggestion should help solve your problem.
Probably the smoll holes are draining exhaust residue.Probaly smells gassy not oily.
the holes are to make sure the system drains so it doesn't freeze in winter.

BY side port do you mean the bailer hook up? The pee tube should be on the power head. Not sure where on the bigger scotts but the smaller ones exited out the back of the power head below the cowl. More like a mist spray than a good stream most times. The scotts have notoriously small pee holes and get plugged easily. I small weedeater string to clear out. Also the water pump are up high in the leg and do not prime well. Makes sure the leg is deep in the water.

Are you running it on muffs is that how your seeing the water come out below the cavitation plate? Not sure how well they do on muffs, I'd use a barrel.

"Side port"??? You mean a pipe about 3/8" in diameter? That is the fitting for the bailer hose. As far as I remember, the water pump indicator outlet is a big hole on the backside. Water blows out with exhaust.

Maybe I'm missing something but I don't see how that motor could run on muffs and if in a barrel how you tell that water is coming out below the plate.

Not too sure about Muffs also?

Both pumps have seperate water intake lines and discharge exits to prevent bilge water in the bailer system from being circulated through the engine cooling system..
Engine cooling water comes from below anti cavitatiopn plate and pumps around power head/exhaust cover/cylinder heads then is discharged into idle relief chamber, and then into the lower engine casing. The bailer pump picks up water from the foot and discharges it into lower engine casing, where it is carried away with the exhaust.

The plate between the bailer pump and cooloing pump should have a hole in it. Need to make sure that is open and not plugged with grease or impellar parts. It allows water into the bailer when the Bail-O-Matic is not hooked up to prevent that impellar from burning up. If it's working properly there should be some water coming out the bailer port when running.
