59 seaking fuel knobs???

on the front of my 35hp there are two knobs, one that says slow speed and one that says high speed, i believe that by turning them, you adjust the abount of fuel that goes into the carb... the problem used to be that the knobs would turn themselves loose from vibration, but i used rubber bands and that fixed it pretty good... now my problem is... the boat will do about 18mph, then ill shut it off and fish for a while, then it will only do 13mph, and no matter how i adjust the mix ( low or high) i cant get it to go any faster...

my main question is, is there a trick to the mix. is there a base setting i should start at? should i tighten the knobs all the way, then just loosen till it starts and go from there? i really have no clue how its supposed to work, i can make it work alright, but in my manual there is nothing that says how exactly to use these knobs...

thank you for any help in advance...

Re: 59 seaking fuel knobs???

Joe Reeves post explains best how to set those knobs:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=030558
The brass nuts just behind the adjustment knobs are packing nuts like on a water valve. By tightening them you'll keep them from leeking and put friction on the knobs. If the packing nuts can't be tightened, then the packing behind them is spent and needs to be replaced. Search the Johnny/Rude forum for "packing" if you need part numbers or alternatives.

As for your stopping/running problem, do you tilt the engine out of the water when you stop to fish? Do the RPMs seem to be turning up all the way as before, or just about half the way?

well when i go for bass at pleasant, usually only 15-20 or so, but little ones... when i go to rosevelt i usually catch some big crappies and a decent amnt too... when i go to horseshoe res. i usually catch at least 10 big cats from 5-15lbs... but today im going to bartlett and ive never been there, so this will be cool, and ive been told this lake is in a canyon so it shouldnt be windy, and that means i can plane out well... but next month when it warms up a little i plan on going an a trip to chevlon canyon for brown trout, and then a 3 day trip to lees fairy* near paige az for rainbow trout...

i usually do pretty well, and put it this way... if you ever came to my house youd be leaving with some frozen fish...

Re: 59 seaking fuel knobs???

ok... i re-sealed the lower unit, and set the knobs just like the link said. i got a average of about 16mph on the lake, and that is pretty good i think, as far as the lower unit leak, it seems to have stopped ( or at least dramatically slowed for now.)

my new question is, how fast should a 1959 35hp engine make me go? could my prop be the wrong one for my motor. it just seems like 16mph is slow.

so now im thinking... should i buy one of those plane out fins, and should i buy a new prop... if you guys tell me to, that is.

and if you need, tell me what numbers you need off the prop, and ill get em for you.

thanks for any help you can give...

Re: 59 seaking fuel knobs???

Unfortunately, we're missing the big number; the RPMS it's turning at full throttle. But 16 MPH seems slow - I would expect at least 20MPH. On a light, reasonably long boat 30MPH.

Verify the engine appears to be running healthy. Ideally you want to do this immediately after running full throttle, but you might be able to get a clue right now. Remove both spark plugs and examine their firing ends. They'll need to be fairly fresh for this. You want a colour somewhere between tan and chocolate brown. They should be identical.

Check the prop for numbers stamped onto the blade, directly behind the brass washer just after the shear pin, or sometimes you have to look from the other end - the stick them in the casting between the hub and the outer shell of the prop. It's a longshot though, unless a really really wrong prop is on there.

I mentioned in your other post why I think plane out fins are a bad idea, especially on this engine. They'll drag horribly if you can't get them out of the water.

Another longshot, but a good decarb might find you some speed. Perhaps there's a stuck ring or two. Speaking of which, have you ever checked compression on this engine?

Tell me what you find.
