I am going to replace the points, condenser and ignition coil, what special tools will I need once the starter assembly has been removed (aside from the basic wrench and sockets)? The manual says flywheel puller but I'm sure I will need other tools. Also, do I get all these tools from any tool store or do I need to go to someplace special? Any comments about prices would also be of help.

Thanks,
BJ

You will need a screwdriver and a feeler gauge with .020" gauge in it to set the points. It sounds like you have the manual so just follow the instructions. :)

double check if the lower unit on the '59 35 and the '59 fifty are the same(I think they are).
If so,the clutch dog # is 305105.
good luck.

You need the flywheel puller and also a flywheel holder. These are available from local Evinrude and Johnson dealers. They are NOT cheap.

Also, if you move the coils, there is another special tool you need to realign the coils called a locator ring, from the same dealers.

The 35 and 50 lower units are not similar - the 50hp leg is a monster.

As for the flywheel puller, you can use a regular harmonic balancer 3-point puller. Use some 1/4"20 Allen bolts and some hefty washers to keep them from pulling through. Puller can be gotten at Sears, NAPA, etc.

For aligning the coils, simply make sure the laminates are flush with the machined edge of the armature plate so that you can't feel the ridge with your fingernail...
- Scott
