So a got this motor off craigslist, and was so excited when I got it to fire up! But...

There are four ports about half way down the the "shaft" that I thought were supposed to shoot out water, but they only shoot out warm air and maybe a little mist. does this mean the impeller is bad? or is it that way because the engine is air cooled?

Also, I've only fired it up like 4 or 5 times for less than a minute each time (I fear a bad impeller and burning out the motor) but the motor starts fine, runs okay at about mid throttle, but when I try to take it up past 3/4 power it sputters out and dies. Any ideas what would cause it?

I'm not sure I got the gas mix right yet, anyone know the right mix?

Welcome to Iboats,
Yep chances are the impeller is shot, it will use a Eska type most likly the tall impeller, the cooling system is hybred, water for the lower crank bearing and in some case's the bottom of the cylinder. Now about the sputttering....try cleaning the points and gap them, you may also need to give the carb a good cleaning and a rebuild....try the points first, you will need to pull the flywheel off so if you need help with that get back to us and someone can give you some pointers.

K so I have been searching and reading and I think I might have to much fuel line right now, possibly causing the stalling problem? I'm gonna shorten the length (its like 4' long right now) next time I work on it and hope that helps. So the impeller, those "ports on the shaft" should be putting out a steady stream correct? cause when I fired it up today it was more like a mist coming out of them. Just trying to make sure its bad before I start digging into the motor.

I have a Clinton Apache 5 of the same era that I picked up a few years ago. It was apparently used once or twice. I've used it a couple times and run it on occasion 'in the barrel.' On the last occasion it was run for a couple hours straight and ran well. Mine puts out a mix of exhaust and liquid (mist) and appears to be running normal. I don't think you should expect a solid flow of water squirting out those small holes. Your motor may be running as designed and now I'm hoping mine is. The system is just as mrcrabs described a hybrid.

Thanks, ya I'm hoping its good to go. where would I check the temp at if I was trying to see if the motor was warming up? I only paid 50 for the motor and I'm hoping not to pass that cost up to get it running smoothly :D

yeah a mist is what your looking for, water is coming down the leg and the exhaust pushes it out the relief holes.
As far as checking temp....well idling around or runnig in a barrel an't the same as pushing a boat but if I were using a temp gun I would look to see what its getting to close to the base near the crank...obviously the rest is air cooled, it was advertised that these motors could survive for long periods of time with a failed water pump with a richer oil to gas mix and no doubt they did....almost every Eska single cylinder I have had came in with a bad impeller and there still ticking.

I would still put money on the points needing service to stop the high speed sputtering,
I would go with a 24:1 mix until we can confirm that mix ratio....I have a manual some place around here.

I really appreciate all the help guys. Just to be clear, the "mist" is what is the norm for this style motor?

I can never see water blowin' out of mine, so I shove my hand in back of the holes. It doesn't take long for it to be running water off my digits.
