Re: 5HP Briggs and Stratton

The start of the video is the motor running at high idle which is the start position. Then towards the end of the video I turned the knob left to low idle and it gets a little more rough.

I had put the outboard in gear while in the tank and it smokes more I think and the smoke is definitely white or grayish. I'll try using my video camera instead of my phone and post a video on youtube. Sorry about the crappy video.

I'm going to do that now. :)

Good Video.

I doesn't look that bad and the water getting ugly is normal.

The next thing to do is take it out and run it on the boat, see if it will get up to speed. The only thing that may be taking place is there is a bunch of gunk in the exhaust housing restricting the flow, its not uncommon for people to think their motor is shot when this happens and they sell it for cheap when all it needs is to be cleaned out.

Well, the other thing may be that its sucking in the fumes and running poor, but putting it on the boat and running it hard will let you know which it is.

OK, there's is another thing, it could still be a dirty carb.

Again, starting without the choke doesn't mean there is a problem.

When you squeeze the bulb a couple of times does it get hard and stay firm, or does the pressure bleed down? If it bleeds down it means either the check valve it bulb leaks, or the float needle in the carb leaks.

My motors tend to have a whitish smoke when I run Sea Foam through them in a high concentration, so if there's still some S/F in the tank, that can make it smoke and run like that.

Okay, I'll take it to the lake on Saturday and report back. Thanks for all the help from everyone. :)

One other thing, you didn't say in your profile what part of the world you live in, this can effect how the motor runs.

If you live at a high altitude it may run like a dog if its still jetted for sea level.

I have really a DUMB question here. Is the B&S 5 hp a 2 stroke or 4 stroke as I've never seen one? The reason I ask is that ONDARVR said something about leaving the 50:1 mix in it

4 stroke, he was talking about the merc, the whole thread should have been moved when it went merc

Thank you MRCRABS. I've never heard of a 2 stroke B&S.

Re: 5HP Briggs and Stratton

I took the Mercury out today and I have to say it ran very well. When I first started it up it was smoking pretty good. But once I got it up to a good speed the exhaust basically disappeared. I would stop and only a small amount of exhaust was detectable which I think would be normal for a 2-stroke.

It was still a little rough on the idle but it did just fine. I was able to get my boat on plane and could cruise at about 25mph. I was afraid to go faster because it became hard to control the boat beyond that but I have to guess I could go 30-35mph easily. Now I just need some front end weight so I can go fast all the time, lol.

I did notice oil deposits around the outboard after stopping it. Small traces of something petroleum based could be seen. After taking the boat out of the water I couldn't see any noticable leaks anywhere so I figured it had to be from the exhaust. I also heard a small "clanking" noise when I would take it up to 20mph but maybe that's due to the vibration when running that fast.

I wanna thank you all for taking the time to walk this noob through this. My plan is to rebuild the carb or take it to a service center and just have them rebuild and tweak things on it.
