I'm trying to find the year of this motor. Model # 94gg9014a also I'm having problems with it. Can't get it to run smooth. Keeps changing.

Hi creek. You have a 1949 model. What is the motor doing exactly?

Re: 5hp montgomery wards

That's a 1949/1950 Gale built engine. Gale was a division of OMC, so it's nearly identical to the Johnson TD series 5hp engines from that era.
Try to determine if you have a fuel or spark problem. Try putting a little fuel mix (24:1 87 octane gas to TCW-3 rated outboard oil) in a spray bottle and spray it down the carb's throat to see if it makes any difference. If not, try running the engine on one cylinder by grounding the spark plug wire of the other. Compare the two cylinders. If it's suddenly picking up or slowing down, it may be an ignition coil arcing over.

Tell us what you find, and welcome to Iboats! :)

EDIT: Drowned Rat - pardon the post collision. Looks like you beat me to it. :)

Re: 5hp montgomery wards

Thanks for the info. on the motors year. Hard to believe its that old. Looks pretty good.Believe it or not had this motor in a barrel trying to get it to run right, did everything imaginable couldn't figure it out. Just out of curiousty blew air at the carburator with an air hose while it was running, runs perfect. I guess it was a combination of steam and exhaust coming up out of the barrel, I hope. :D :D Thanks I appreciate it. creek
