Hello all. I recently was given a Montgomery Ward Sea king 5hp. Model # 15gg-9015; Serial # 394905. It has been sitting a long time. Upon removing the gas cap I could see the threads are covered in old gummed up gas, what little gas that came out of it was orangeish/brown. I was wondering if this is worth putting a little time and money into, I am fairly handy with a wrench. I could not find a year designation or manufacturer on the motor. Thanx in advance for any help or advice.

Howdy, Russo.

Welcome to iboats. :)

The GG in the model number identifies your engine as made by Gale, a division of OMC. It is identical to a Johnson/Evinrude engine of a year or so earlier, except for the paint and decals.

It was probably made in the late 50s, so it is a great little engine, worth (to me anyway) bringing back into regular use.

I don't have the year. Someone will be along soon who does.

Re: 5hp SeaKing

Thank you sir! Thats good to know, I really like breathing new life into old machines. I have an old BMW motorcycle I restored, but this will be my first experience with any kind of marine engine work. I have enough info to get started at any rate. I appreciate the the words of encouragement! I will be fishing my favorite spots with a cool old school outboard! Priceless.

You have a 51 Gale 5 hp, reverse the first two numbers of the model number to get the year made. You can remove the tank, fuel lines and carb for cleaning real easy. Make sure the tank and the little filter/screen are really clean before you try to run fresh fuel/oil mix in it. They are stout little motors and very reliable. Your 51 has a neutral clutch but no reverse gear, you spin it around 180 degrees for reverse. Acme Outboards has owners manual for it...helped me a lot when I redid a similar motor several years ago. Parts from same era Evinrudes are interchangeable with your Gale.

I ordered the manual today. I took the motor to my friends garage and got aquainted with it. What an elegant piece of machinery. I dont think I'll have too much trouble with it, and will post a progress report soon. Thanx again guys.
