I am troubleshooting a 1974 115 HP Johnson with a cold start problem. I posted a few days ago and received some info and tips which I haven't got a chance to try yet. The weather is crappy here again, so I've been reading through my factory service manual. I was reading about the fuel tank hose and primer bulb and noticed it says that the primer bulb should be located near the tank with a short hose between tank and bulb and any longer run of hose after the bulb to motor. I have been using a tank and hose from another boat which I modified when I moved the fuel tank in it from the stern to the bow. I hadn't heard of the primer bulb location info before and just added hose without even thinking about it. Well...I ended up with about a 8 foot run of hose from tank to bulb and about a 4 foot run from bulb to motor, exactly opposite of what the manual says. It works fine on the boat and motor I had been using it on but I do plan on changing it to what the manual says. My question is....could this have been causing me any problems as far as my hard starting? I kinda doubt it cuz, like I said it's been working fine in the other boat the way it is, but I'm actually hoping maybe it was adding to the problem and fixing the bulb location will magically solve my cold start problems. :D
And yes, the arrow on the bulb is pointing toward the motor.

The location of the primer bulb is not critical.

I actually prefer the bulb to be at the motor as I just find it handier there. Never heard it should be close to the tank before. Rick.

As long as the bulb can pick up fuel and prime the engine the location does not matter at all....
