I would think that a Johnson or Evinrude dealer should have that plastic pinion gear.

Pinion-Part # 0318447. Any dealer should have it, or try ishopmarine.com

It's a bit tricky to replace if you don't have instruction. The recoil spring has to be released and rewound. Not hard to do, just have to know how to do it.

Ne1 has the instructions on how to rewound the spring
I have the Clymer manual but no instruction just pictures of the spring

Do I have to pull out the pin on the pinion?

Re: 6 hp Evinrude fisherman

You will need to remove the pull start to change the gear.

Disconnect the rope from the handle and feed back into the starter.
Remove the (2) top bolts on starter.
Remove (2) bottom bolts.
Wiggle and lift starter out. - Don't loose the long pin that guides the rope.

Loosely start the lower bolts into the bottom starter plate. Do Not Tighten.

Do the gear replacement.
Set the starter spring into the lower plate and align the spring tab into the slot in the lower plate.

Slip the starter over the spring
Install the long pin
Secure the top starter plate and tighten the lower bolts

Remove the spark plugs
Raise the new starter gear and slide a pliers handles under to hold it up against the flywheel
Turn the flywheel about 8 turns to load the Starter spring.
Feed the rope out and extend it fully and secure to handle
Hole onto the rope, release the pliers and feed the rope back in.

Giver it a few pulls to test everything out.
