I have read all the posts on this subject and am totally stumped! I am bench testing with a mighty vac and pushing fuel into the carb. It is being pushed out the main jet into the carb throat. Looking at the amount of fuel in the bowl when I open it up it may not be filling up just pushing out. Does the carb have a vent that could be plugged and not allowing the float bowl to fill and shut off the flow??

There has to be a vent. If there was not or if it is blocked what you observe will happen ... The carb will flood even though the bowl is not filled to the correct level but are you sure the needle valve and seat are good.

Thank you for the reply. I found the vent. It is a small brass port on the front of the carb. It was plugged and because I took a short cut and did not dip the carb body I paid the price. I have fun figuring out these things so it is all fun to me. After poking a hole in the varnish I was able to spray carb cleaner and clear the vent. I plan to dip it tonight but had to test the carb anyway and it ran without flooding! Now it runs ok at low speeds but loads up on the high speed? More fiddling is needed

Oh ya, The needle and seat are working good, no fuel dripping out of the carb except when I choke it too much.

Runs Perfect Now! OK the carb went into the Berrymans yesterday and today I washed it Blew out all the areas I could see. When Blowing I heard a clog give way! The clog was a small port on the face of the carb shown in the pics below. This was THE problem with the carb overflowing and the float needle not closing. Hurray! There was a small brass oriface in that hole that must have been blown out into the abyss of the shop? If the float bowl vent is clogged it just pushes the gas coming in out the main jet tube, never filling the float bowel up enough to close the needle. I was afraid the missing orafice would affect the running but it does not and is only a vent for the float bowl, We will see? The second discovery was there is a small hole in the top of the carb that I believe allows air in to mix with the high speed circuit. I blew out this hole and another clog opened up! This explained why the motor ran decent at low rpm but choked out rich when revved up. If this port is clogged no air mixes with the fuel in the high speed circut so pure fuel is drawn into the motor and is VERY rich flooding it out. You should have seen the test tank when I was trying to get this thing running with both ports clogged. There was a layer of oil/gas 1/4 " thick. Now the water is nice and clean and the motor purrs. I am giving this detailed blow by blow because I know someone is going to have one or both of these problems and this may help. So if your carb is flooding out don't do what I did and just spray out the float and seat, do a complete dip and cleaning It will save you tons of time!

Sure runs good in the tank. If the hole in the top of the carb needs a shot plug I will know when I take it out in the spring.

Be very careful if you install a lead shot in the top of that carburetor.

There is no lead shot in the top hole pointed out in the pic below? do I need to install one? It runs good as is? Does anyone have a flow chart for the carb so I can figure out what the port is for? Thanks John

I have looked at a couple of carburetors that have that hole OPEN.----I could look at a few more.

Thank you great info. I guess the best thing is to just try it out and see how it performs pushing the boat instead of the test tank. Spring is just 4-5 months away.

i was sort of kidding. if it runs fine, i can't imagine anything goes in there. it's probably just a metering hole of some sort. if racer says its fine, you should be good to go. didn't mean to alarm you! but i'm pretty sure there are 4 lead pieces in that one. 2 at the rear on either side , one on top and i forgot were the other one is without it infront of me

Maybe I am wrong but I thought what you are pointing to in the picture in #14 was the float chamber vent but should be sealed where you are pointing with lead shot as it links with the horizontal passage which opens in the front face of the carb to the left ( as you look at it) of the slow running needle
I dont think it will matter if you do not fit the lead shot.

I thought the passage in your other picture, to the right of the slow running needle, was the air bleed for the slow running mixture
