I recently purchased a 1993 Johnson 6HP. It looks and runs great. Since getting it home it has a small oily leak (assume gear lube?) coming from a small (1/8 inch) hole that is in the back of the lower unit unit just above where the lower and upper gearcase bolt together. Any idea what is causing this?:

Most likely you are looking at unburnt oil/gas dripping down out of your exhaust. This is normal. You could unscrew the lower drain plug to see if any water comes out of your gearcase to be sure. If it hasn't been run in a week or so any water in the gearcase should seperate and make its way to the bottom and be the first to run out when you unscrew that bolt. If only oil comes out you are probably OK.

Thanks. It last ran in a barrel and just wanted to make sure I didn't have a big problem...before I called the guy I bought it from!!

The problem of exhaust leaking is magnified when you run it in a barrel and/or fog your motor for storage with fogging oil. All my motors have a pan under them when stored.
