I have a 6 hp Johnson (long shaft), 6RL78b. 1978?
It is not pumping water through the exhuast or pee tube. I have been unable to remove the lower unit. The SELOC manual references a "pin in the upper drive shaft" which needs to be aligned in order to remove unit. I have rotated the flywheel several times and can not figure out how to determine this alignment.
The unit drops about 1/2 inch and on pressure feels like it is hung up at the upper end of the shaft but wont budge, and I don't want to force it for fear of causing damage.

Any ideas?

look in the gap for the shift rod connector. should be a bolt there that you take out, the bolt has to go back thru the indentation on the lower shift rod, when reassembling.

Agreed, first remove the spark plugs, then drop the lower unit enough to remove the bolt from the shift rod connector. Then as you continue to apply light force to drop the lower unit, slowly rotate the flywheel. When the pin aligns with the slot, it will come on down.

When you get if off, make note of the position of the pin so you can put it back together the same way. And do not rotate the flywheel till you get the lower unit back on.

Re: 6 hp Johnson lower unit removal

So when the unit drops about 1/2 - 3/4 inch, I should be able to work it down more so that I can remove shift connector bolt. then rotation of the fly wheel will align the pin, and the unit will come off?
I do not need to align the pin first, before getting the unit low enough to remove shift connector, etc?
Or, getting the unit seperated enough to remove shift connector is NOT dependant on alignment of the pin?

Thanks,
Malik

OK. So I got the lower unit off. I sheared the upper drive shaft pin in the process. There doen't seem to be any other damage.

Getting the pin to align properly is still a mystery to me. My advice for others, and what I will try next time, is to keep the prop in forward and use rotation of the prop to trun the drive shft when trying to align this pin. This is what I did in putting it back together and it seemed to help.

Thanks again,

Malik
