Decent sized tank required , not a bucket

As usual, you guys have made a believer out of me. :) I went and drug out a big plastic bin like you have in your first picture there, and filled it full. The water was almost to the telltale (which is, incidentally, a telltale). Anyway, I started the motor and it peed just fine. I'm sure the water was over the inlet before, but apparently still not deep enough to pick up. It's picking up now, much to my embarassment. This is easier, but I have to swallow my pride to admit it. lol. Nevertheless, it's been a good experience and I certainly appreciate everyone's patience and input. It hasn't even been too much work for a hundred dollar motor. -SFS

We all goof up once and a while. Besides if your thread ended sooner we never would have seen the picture of Vic's weed mulcher which was very funny. Glad to hear she's working for you. Rick.

While this turned out to be a water tub problem, not a water pump problem, the is one bit of trouble shooting advice that I did not see presented.

The old OMC 6hp motors have pretty small water passages under the chrome baseplate in the waterpump. When you install a new impellor, you should always lift it up and inspect that area, because it is prone to clogging with muds, sand, shells, etc.

BTW, you should always see water spraying out the relief hole in the back of the midsection. That motor has a bypass that allows this to happen, even when the thermostadt is closed.
