6 hp Johnson run time

Can anyone here give me a guesstimate on how long a 1967 6 hp Johnson will run on a three-gallon tank? (Motor has just been professionally tuned) I am running it on a light weight 14' (flat-bottomed) Jon boat, prolly about 10 pounds or so of gear, with just myself (about 250#).

I am not figuring on doing a lot of trolling with the outboard, mostly just running near WOT to get fom place to place. Any trolling will be done via electric trolling motor, if at all.

rule of thumb, is 1/10 gallon per Horse power rating per hour. 6hp = .6 gallons per hour wide open throttle. this is rule of thumb, boat, weight, etc compounds the issue.

You will burn roughly 0.6 gallons per hour. That being said, a 3 gallon tank will last about 5 hours. These are WOT calcualations.

If you have a very light boat and can back off of the throttle a little, while remaining on plane, you might give that a try. You will probably suffer little loss in top speed and will become the envy of everyone at the gas pump!

BTW - you have a great little motor that is about as "bullet proof" as an outboard motor gets. I have a few of them and have "run them to death" and they just keep going.

Yea, mine seems like it'll run forever on my 3.3 gal tank. Make sure you use fuel stabilizer - the gas may get old before you use it all.

Plus, if you're fishing, you aren't running the outboard at full throttle much of the time anyhow. If I have a full tank, I just don't worry about fuel that day.
