http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/JOHNSON/1989/J6RLCEC 1989/GEARCASE/parts.html

is a diagram of your lower unit.

what i see looking there is 3 bolts, and your shift linkage and drive shaft. I am not sure of that model as far as the shift rod, but many models when you drop the lower it will move about 3/8" to 3/'4 and you will then have to unscrew the shift rod coupling. which i didn't see in the diagram.

my other two cents is while you are in there, replace water pump impeller= cheap insurance.

hope this helps, others know far more than me.

3 bolts to remove. Two from underneath and one at the front from above.

No joint in the shift rod, it simply pulls from the mechanism ( a couple of bevel gears) at the top.

The drive shaft pulls from the crankshaft.

The water tube pulls out from the water pump

I agree change the pump impeller while its off. The driveshaft oilseals too perhaps

While it is off connect a hose to the water tube to make sure you can get a good flow through the engine.
The grommet at the top of the water tube can be troublesome. Corrosion around it squeezes it over the top of the tube and blocks the water flow. It is a power head off job to sort it out. A real PITA

BUT what do you mean by the "lower unit gasket" and why do you think there is gasket that needs changing ?

Why I think it needs a gasket, is I can see oil leaking out where the lower bolts to the upper part of the motor. It looks like there is no gasket there.

No there is no gasket there.
You may well see oil leaking from that joint.
Unburnt oil from the fuel can seep out from there and from the little drain holes at the front of that joint.

Provided it is not gear oil and you do not find water in the gear oil when you change the oil you do not have a problem.
