60 Gale 35 Mercury switch

Just revived this 60 Gale Sovereign 35 hp and have a couple of questions........In my Johnson Evinrude manual for the 35's it shows that the mercury switch on the throttle ties in with the over rev vacuum switch. This model has no vacuum cut out. This engine is pretty much identical to our 57 Javelin which has the switch so am concerned about over run in its absence. What exactly is the function of the mercury switch on these engines?

This one has been particularly challenging. NOS points that caused a no spark condition, then good spark and no run till wire replacement. It presently runs very well but am wondering what variables caused me to pull that flywheel multiple times. Thanks for any insight.

It's possible that mercury switch is tied into the electric start system of the mtr so the throttle is not to far advanced when starting. If I'm wrong I'm sure somebody will correct me.

Boobie is correct. It just grounds through the cut-out switch. I'm surprised there is no cut-out switch on the Gale. Does it look like someone removed it?

There is no sign of a switch being removed.......seems like this motor is a combination of several OMC 35 hp year models.

Dumb question now, but does it have electric start with a solenoid and ect??

Yes it is an electric start motor with no generator and has the solenoid box style harness.

Re: 60 Gale 35 Mercury switch

Does it have a keyswitch with a kill circuit (turn the key off to kill)? Or does it just have a choke button to kill it? If it has a keyswitch kill circuit, I'd just run the motor and not worry about the cut-out switch. All the cut-out switch does is ground out one set of points to kill the bottom cylinder in case of runaway. Shutting the motor off by turning the key off accomplishes the same thing, except it grounds out both sets of points. If your motor doesn't have a key switch kill circuit, it's easy to add - two wires coming off the points - touch them together(push button to close circuit) to kill the engine.

Re: 60 Gale 35 Mercury switch

There are black wires coming off of both sets of points and the key switch kills the motor. This is why no cut out switch on this motor? Thanks fellows for your input.... it is appreciated.

Not familiar as to whether all Gales didn't have the cut-out switch. But as long as you are aware that if the motor runs away, just turn off the ignition switch, you should be ok. I often wondered why Johnnyrudes continued to include the cut-out switch once they had the key ignition with kill circuit. I guess they figured the cut-out switch was fool-proof as it would cut spark without any action by the operator.

lindy46, as it has electric start it could be wired to the solenoid so the throttle isn't to far advanced when starting. The wire from one of the small terminals on the solenoid could be wired to it.
