I have an opportunity to buy a 60 horse outboard runs but it cuts out then dies it starts again it needs work it comes with controls that have one cable and wiring and a switch its a HYDRO ELECTRIC DRIVE,key and manual that says Johnson sea-horse 60hp model 60ESL71 and 60ES71 1971 owners manual

Any idea of what the problem could be? Is this an engine I can find parts for? I wil check the compression before i buy.
Can mechanics work on these fairly easy? Is there anything else I should worry about when buying this old of an engine?

Thanks

Re: 60 hp Johnson, need advice

i'm going to say 99% cruddy dirty carbs. i have a 71 50 hp, the lower unit shifts gears by and oil pump in the lower, the valves are activated by solenoids, in lower. make sure it shifts. it has to be running in order to shift. also be careful as it start is forward, and then shifts to neutral. i like to remove the prop when testing the motor, i like my knee. the solenoids are no longer available, occasionally you find them on ebay. the rest of parts for power head are available.
