Im new to forums so here it goes...
I recently purchased my first B.O.A.T. I bought an old 95 Astro Bass Boat from a guy who has let it sit for most of this year. I got a great deal on it knowing that it needed a little work. Im pretty good at researching to find problems and fix them myself but this one is definitely a doozey. So ill try to be as detailed as possible. The first time i took it out to see if there were any problems, There definitely was. The Engine started right up no issues. Backed off the ramp slowly. Turned around put it in F started moving slowly. Thought ok everything seems fine. Let me go WOT. Well it quickly died. I thought ok maybe it needs to warm up. Revved it all the way in neutral for a minute. Tried again maybe 1/4 throttle then bogged down and died. i figured ill take a look at everything and see what the issue could be. I talked to the guy i bought it from. He thought air in the hose or priming bulb was bad. Also suggested new spark plugs. Drain old gas etc. He said last time he had it all he had to do was warm it up and it ran good for the rest of the day. He had air in is line before and had the stator replaced about 3 years ago. Other than that he said it has done him fine. So i got back to the house. Had a 3 day weekend and thought it would be a good weekend project. This is what i did that weekend.
1. Drain old gas. Put fresh gas in. (Premix, took off oil injection)
2. Replaced Bulb
3. Soaked Carbs for 2 hours. Got them as clean as i thought they could get with what i had on hand.
4. Replaced Spark Plugs and coils.
5. Replaced all fuel hoses and added anti-siphon valve. (except for one hose. it looked new already.)
6. Took off Fuel Filter to omit that as a possible problem.
7. Still didnt run good so cleaned the carbs a second time just in case.
8. Check compression (120 on all 3 cylinders)
After that I had it running to a little more throttle. But would still die when giving throttle. All that in 3 days. Finally said ok Im done with this. A mechanic can probably fix this easier and quicker. So i dropped it off. They seemed pretty optimistic. So i figured it would be a quick and easy fix. They said I would probably have it back after a couple days.
A week and a half and 300 dollars later...
Today they gave me a call. I was pretty happy ( I thought It was fixed finally)
Heres what they told me
The bottom 2 carbs were not getting fuel so they replaced the hoses on the carbs
They adjusted the idle.
They took it to the river and said it was still doing the same thing. ( I figured)
They also said the thermostat was hot. (idk what that would mean)
They then suggested that the carbs need to be taken off and cleaned.
I told them no that 300 dollars and a week and a half was enough and that ill figure it out myself. I thought that was kind of ridiculous. Ill be paying them for the little work that they did do. Ill be picking it up tomorrow after work.
That is why i wanted to ask more people at once for advice on here.
Some of the things that I want to check when i get it is this:
-Soak carbs overnight
-check for proper venting
-try the primer bulb vertical orientation
-check the spark plug gap
-check drive shaft and lower unit for any gunk or obstruction for any reason
-check proper functionality of the fuel pump
Also the water pump is probably clogged its not a %100 stream of water coming out (could that be a symptom of this issue?)
Is there any other thing that I can check or do that I might be missing. I know someone else has had a similar problem and it was probably something dumb. But I am open to any suggestions. If there are any other questions or more details that I can provide, I will be glad to provide that because I want to get out on the water and get fishing on my new boat. Any Tip is greatly appreciated.
