This is just an update for those of you who have helped me get my old motor running.

I got it out on a lake this weekend where I could run it fast (legally). After some very hard starting and a lengthy warmup I got my little 14ft. Starcraft out to the middle of the lake and hit the throttle. I was amazed with how well it ran, the boat planed almost instantly and went much faster than I had expected a 40hp to push. It sure made for a fun afternoon of boating for my wife and I. Now if I get just get the porpoising under control.

Thanks to everyone for your help. It's time to tweak things and see if I can't get her to idle a bit smoother.

Matt

try some smart tabs to help with the porposing. Other than that, try adjusting the trim of the motor with the bar that the engine rests on at the bottom of the transom bracket.

I'd try moving the outboard's tilt in one pin towards the stern. That should fix your porpoising.

I'm really glad you got your Big Twin up and running.

I'm very happy with the way it ran. Thanks again for the help. To top it all off, my manual arrived in the mail today.

I'm never too sure where to set my tilt, I usually have it in the third spot away from the stern (out of four). I'll move it in a notch and see what happens.

Matt

It is always a compromise between getting the boat to plane as easy as possible, eliminating porpoising, and maximizing prop thrust for efficiency and top speed. It's a lot of work for one little prop. Keep in mind that props are for propelling, and asking them to do something else is always a compromize. That is why trim tabs are so efficient and valuable to boat performance.
