Hey All,
I have a 18' Holiday and took out the top end of the 135hp it came with. My question is since I only use the boat for lake fishing is a 60hp merc big enough? I would like to get up on a plane but don't need to go any faster then that. My buddy thinks I need at least a 90hp for that. Anyone running a 60hp on a 18 footer?

I have seen 40 hp on an 18' boat. No you will not win any races but I would think it would get you on plane. Thats the beauty of these aluminum boats, less weight. What would you have to lose by trying it?:confused:

I have a 70 HP on my 18' holiday and it performs very well. I don't have a gps or speedo but I estimate that it goes about 30mph. I think that the 60hp would be fine, I would recommend power tilt/trim, it will help you get on plane. Also make sure that you use the right prop to make sure that you are getting all 60hp out of that engine, you might have to try a couple untill you get it right. I think that will be plenty of power and much better on fuel.

I think you'll plane fine with a 60. I'm hittin' 40MPH with my 90.

A 60 with the right prop to get your engine into the recommended wot rpms should be adequate for fishing.

Thanks for the input. That 135 sure made it fly but couldn't fish with it. I am hoping a 60 will hit the best of both worlds. A little speed and slow enough to troll with.
