Ok,here is my problem. The last time I was on the water with the boat it was surging then would just die, restart and do the same thing so I took it in to a repair shop 90miles away.Ten days later they said it ran good,no problems. All they did was spark plugs, comp. test and tank test.Anyways today I took it out and seemed fine for the first ten minutes then some slight surging occured, throttled down and it died.cranked and cranked but would not start.Tried shifting it in gear then back in neutral and started, reved it up to 3000 and just died hard.Cranked and crank, nothing.Put it in gear and back it starts, got to the dock and it quit again, loaded it and came home.Any suggestions? It is a 1992 60hp Evinrude.Fuel filter is good, tank filter, bulb hard, gas vent, new fuel, plugs, all good.

What are the compression numbers? Did shop use your fuel tank or their fuel tank?

i think the fuel line in your boat needs to be replaced. You must be pulling air from somewhere.

Quin.... With a problem such as yours, it's difficult to diagnose a engine when it's running properly. Intermitent problems will drive a person nuts! It must be checked when the problem occurs.

However, in reading your explanation of the problem, it appears to be either a fuel restriction or a loss of ignition.

A fuel restriction is usually caused by a "Anti Siphon Valve" which would be located right where the rubber fuel hose connects to the built in fuel tank. It would be a 2" aluminum fitting that contains a Ball, Spring, and a Ball Seat. If you do have a fuel restriction, and have that valve, knock out the inner components and convert it to a straight thru fitting.

On the other hand, if when the engine dies, you find that you have no ignition, or very weak ignition, disconnect the "Black/Yellow" wire from the powerpack. Disconnecting that wire eliminates the wiring harness(s) and the ignition switch. If you now have ignition, I'd suggest you replace the ignition switch as it is probably developing a high resistance short. Note... with that wire disconnected, you will not be able to shut the engine down with the ignition switch.

You mentioned that the engine would start after shifting into and out of gear. Could the safety switch that keeps engine from starting in gear be shorting out or possibly loose or misaligned? When engine starts, the vibration could cause the switch to move or short out? Just a guess.

Thanks for your replies,I did replace the fuel fitting before the tank just before taking the boat to the shop.I phoned the shop this morning and from what I told him he figures it is a weak power pack, but of course has none in stock. Is their any way of testing this power pack at home?I think I will dig into the safety switch problem that squeakit mentioned,I did mention this to the dealer and he said it was probably just because the power pack cooled down, not the shifting in and out of gear that made it start.Thanx again guys, very helpfull.

you just have to work harder on getting those bugs out! It could take as long as 30 minutes then again it could take you 30 months thats just the way they are.

Surging would have nothing to do with the power pack. Sounds like a fuel problem to me.
According to my schematic ,the safety switch is part of the Starting Circuit only. After engine is running you could short it or throw it away and it would make no difference.
Try a different tank. Could be the fuel pickup in tank sucking air when fuel is in a certain position.

Compression test first, then spark test. If it runs good for 10 minutes, power pack or stator may be wimping out.

Sounds like a possible air leak. Check solenoid maintenance valve for crack. To islolate your problem between fuel problem or electrical, remove your intake covers and spray fuel (50/1) with a spray bottle of some type and see what happens when the motor starts to bog down. By spraying fuel into the different carbs you isolate which one is the problem or effected. If your motor still quits, look at the electrical.
