60hp Evinrude

HELP!!! I took on more than a challange. I purchased a 1988 17' Boston Whaler with a 60 hp Evinrude VRO from a little old lady. It's been in freshwater about 6 times, but that was 5 years ago! Nothing has been done to it since. Good news it's been in a garage. I've changed the fluids, fuel filter, plugs, "WD-40'd" the cylinders and cleaned the carbs. but....the only way it runs more than 5-10 seconds is if I "pump" the primer at the key start.??? Help, why can't I get it ti idle. When I cleaned the carbs, number 1 & 3 had a little sluge in the bowl, number 2 was clean as a whisle. Help? capt-ashkicker@excite.com

Engine settling out when key primer is repeatedly pushed in indicates a fuel restriction in carbs or possibly a failing fuel pump. Can you keep the engine running if you continue to repeatedly push the primer switch?If so I would rule out fuel pump.Generally if the fuel pump is worn out you would have to repeatedly squeeze the primer bulb.Did you insure that the pickup tubes in the carb bowls were clear and unrestricted?It doesn't take much gummy deposit or particulates to restrict these.Also you can test the fuel pump at cranking speed by disconnecting the pump discharge hose and routing it into a clear container while noting the pumps performance while cranking engine.

That was quick, thanks! "Pumping the Primer Switch" is the only way the engine will run. I'm sure the fuel pump is fine, I'll pull the carbs again and check the passages. Thanks for the support!

ob!<br /><br />It runs, I "RE-cleaned" the carbs and I now have a good idle, and it rev's into high idle!........ but, only in neutral! When I put it into gear, "in the water" I can reach a speed of 5 MPH, then when I power up, it stalls almost immediately? HELP! ....possibly a fuel system problem? or what?

capt.,Check to insure that the carb linkage roller in inline ,on center ,and just touching the fiber cam scribe line when engine controls are in neutral.This setting is factory and dictates at what curve the carb flaps open in conjunction with ignition timing.

It still sounds like you have a fuel restriction issue. Did you remove and thoroughly clean the high speed jets while cleaning the carb? <br /><br />If not, you need to check them out. They are usually fairly easy to remove even with the carbs mounted. To do this first remove the carb drain plugs (the 1/4-20 screws on the front bottom of the bowls). The jets are screwed into the bowl casting behind the drains. To remove them simply unscrew them. Ideally you should have the official OMC removal tool for removing the jets. However, if you are creative with an old screwdriver and a bench grinder you should be able to fashion a suitabe tool. After removing the jets get a fine wire (smaller than the jet size) and work it into the orifice with the assistance of a generous amount of carb cleaner. When the jet orifices are totally clean reinstall along with the bowl plugs. <br /><br />I hope this helps.

Thanks Guys,<br /><br />Sorry about loosing touch for a few days, work goes on.<br /><br />I'll recheck the jets, I recall getting a flow through them, but maybe a restriction.<br /><br />I did adjust the carb sync. and roller alignment, no inprovement
