60HP rough intermittent idle.

Asking for a friend.

He says it sometims Idle's rough and then will end up quitting. Sounds like its being choked out or not getting enough fuel possible.

He said he's had a shop look at it and they got nothing, they've took apart the carbs and havn't found much.

I thought it sounded like a float issue.

Let me start by saying that I'm new to this working on boats thing. From the info I've seen on here, it could be any number of problems. Carbs? Possible. Spark? Also a possibility. I just purchased a boat with a 71 60 Johnson, and am going through the conversion to automotive coil, ballast and condenser instead of the original coil and amplifier setup. The guy I bought it from was having an intermittent spark problem. Sometimes it would run, sometimes not, sometimes run but not very good. Seems to me he should narrow down his electrics (testing voltage and such, of which there are many posts on here), and then check fuel. Electrics can sometimes seem the same as something else. Don't know if this helps, but wanted to add my thoughts anyway.

If it is a 1970-71, and if you are still trying to run those surface gap plugs like came with the motor, throw those lousy things in the garbage and install L77JC4 plugs. That ignition system just flat cannot fire surface gap plugs.

ooh, not sure on year, but I doubt its that old, the boat is a 93. And its a Johnson.

okay, found out some more useful info.

its actually an evinrude, and its a 93.

has he started with compression and spark tests ? What were the results?
