Ok I have not had the boat long only a few days but just went on my second outing and when I got back after pulling it home I put the motor down and was starting to flush it out then oil leaked out everywhere. I had it started and as soon as I walked around and seen it i pulled the cover. It was spraying me in the face. I turned it off and noticed the dip stick was loose. A lot of oil leaked out but there is just a little bit on the end of the stick when checked so I guess not all of it is out. Its 6:00PM and all boat stores are closed. Can I put car oil in it to test it? Do you think this is just as simple as the dipstick coming out? It did seem kinda loose. Thanks for any info. This is a 2002 if it matters 240hours on the motor.

while I dont advocate switching oil brands, mostly due to widely varying additive packages, it wont hurt.
keep the oil level from the lower cross hatchs to the center,NEVER try to top it off full.
but if the dip stick is out oil does go everywhere :).

Re: 60hp yamaha oil everywhere

Well, I put some havoline in it 10w-40. Started it up and it sounded a little funny but then again I never heard it running with the cover off so I am guessing its fine. It took 1/2 qt to bring to midpoint on stick and it states 2 liter capacity so I figure it was not low enough to hurt anything. I am unsure if I want to change my own oil. I have always changed it in vehicles but unsure about the boat motor. thanks for looking. Is there any type after market dip stick that locks in or holds better.

nothing aftermarket
if your smart enough to change your auto oil this outboard is well within your capeability,
its very easy, just shoot for a level of about half way up the stick, resist the temptation to top it off :).
nice thing about the outboard is no laying down is required :)

While waiting for the replacement dipstick, you could wrap around the base of the dipstick with some plumbing tape (about 90 cents per roll from Home Depot). This really works (I used it with my car's dipstick). Cheers

this a great motor and will stick with you for a long time, give it the best - yamalube oil only.
