60s era 9.9 Chrysler autoelectric outboard model 923

Hoping to get some help on reviving this motor, when I got it it would turn over but not start. The metal cap on top of the starter that holds the wiring for the light bulb was not screwed on and the red wire which is the positive for the light bulb broke and touched the coiled up piece of metal right next to it. You can see in the pic the red wire on the far left which I have repaired and the coiled piece it touched. When it touched the coil there was a short and ever since then it will not turn over. The solenoid will click but nothing else, any ideas what might have happened? I assume I fried something.

Second question, any idea how to get to the actual starter, I removed 3 long screws that screwed in from the top down into the base that the starter sits on. Won't budge, do I need to use penetrating oil and put pressure on it? Or do I need to remove the big flat head screws that circle the starter? See pic and thanks!

I think you have blown a fuse or tripped a auto fuse.
Have not checked with the wire diagram yet but will look at it later.
To remove the dyna start winding and to access the flywheel you have to have a special tool.
The winding is fitted to a taper and you need the special tool to get it loose from the taper.

I can remove the entire piece that sits above the flywheel, this is the part that fits over the flywheel, contains the starter and where the voltage regulator is mounted. I can also get the flywheel off, I was wondering about removing the housing that protects the actual starter. I think you are right about the fuse. If you have a wiring diagram I would really appreciate it!

I reread your post, sounds like I need a special tool to remove just the starter. Gotcha. I did find what looks like a ceramic tube that two wires were attached to but there was no filament or anything in it, no metal caps on the ends, but the ends were damaged like they had been broken. I am guessing that was the fuse? Wonder if it exploded out the ends?

PM me and I will send you a wiring diagram for this motor or the similar 9,2, 20Hp with autoelectric (dyna starter) starter.
I will check in my books and workshop collection which diagram I have.
I worked on a 1968 20Hp last autumn and from what I remember there was just a couple of screws and use of the special tool to remove the starter.
I had to clean and adjust one of the points because one cylinder did not have spark.
Made the tool myself from measurements of it that Franz Buddenberg at Franz Marine gave me.
