Hi I bought an aluminum v-hull with 2 engines that I cant deside which one to spend time on. The first is a Johnson 25hp model 25RL70E that is missing a stop switch and has low compression on both cylinders. The other is an Evinrude but im not sure of hp or year the numbers on the transom bracket are 10602D E06378 best as I can read. I have searchethis number with no luck but by the style of the engine cover im guessing its from the 60's. This engine looks to be complete and even has fuel in the filter but I have not checked compression nor tried starting this engine yet. Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Could it be 10622D? If so that is a 1966 9.5hp.

The Johnson is for sure a 1970. May just need a head gasket, hard to tell without inspecting though.

Look for a quarter size plug ve the on the top aft of the block. It will have the model and swerial no. stamped on it.

Found the quarter size plug and the numbers are 10302D E06378. Have not yet tried to decode them yet just wanted to post the numbers and say thanks for the info.

Thanks for the confirmation now I have to concentrate on the johnson 25hp. Maybe tommorow i will soak the cylinders with oil to see if the compression comes up. I checked it last weekend and only got 19psi on top and 7psi on bottom. If oil dont bring it up I will remove the head and inspect the cylinder walls before I spend any money on ignition tune-up parts and waterpump kit. Thanks

Absolutely no way in hades is an oil soak going to cure compression that low. That really is NO compression. Pull the head and take a look. Something will be obvious.

Here's a great link for you 10 hp. I had a '61 that was great (except for that pesky clutch dog). Ditto on the compression, or lack thereof. Somethings up that's gonna require removing the head. Just take you time and soak the bolts in a bit of penetrating oil ahead of time to help loosen them up. A bit of heat is handy too. However, even if you do all of that correctly you may still have one or two head bolts that break. Patience is a virtue, and cussing can help too. Good luck!

Re: 60's Evinrude Serial Number

Thanks for the link right now im going to set the 10hp aside as I need a larger motor for my boat so im going to work on my 70 johnson 25 that has no compression. I saw a 63 johnson 28hp powerhead on ebay with good compression for cheap and was wondering if it would bolt on to my motor? I have been looking for parts availability before I tear into it and it looks like oversize pistons are going to be hard to find. Like I posted earlier these motors came with a boat I bought so I dont have anything invested in these motors but it would be cool to get this old johnson goin for a few hundred versus purchasing another motor so hopefully in a few days i will get this thing tore down and inspected to see why it has so low of compression. Thanks

How little is "no compression" on the current 25 hp powerhead? It's pretty rare for these old motors to be completely fried, unless it has seized up entirely. Have you taken the head gasket off the see what's what? Perhaps it can be saved. Not sure about the compatibility, however.

Re: 60's Evinrude Serial Number

Well I removed the head and it dont look too bad. The gasket is in 1 piece and dont appear to be blown and the cylinders are nice and shinny so it dont appear to of had water in the cylinders however I did see scratches in both cylinders. I would have to remove the pistons to see what scratched it but if I had to guess id say the wrist pins. Id say that the cylinders would need oversized piston and all I have located online are standard size pistons and rings so im probably going to look for another motor. Thanks
