i have the same Johnson 1966 rdsl 28 (it looks like the is a B at the end of the model number?). My question is can you interchange the stern bracket assemblies from newer models? The port and starboard brackets on it need to be replaced.

The transome brackets are interchangeable till 1970. Pretty much all of those Super Quiet style 40's are the same from 1960 - 70. Even the '58 and '59 Super Quiet 35's are 95% interchangeable with the 40's.

OK guys here's a question.
I have a 57 Crestliner 18'Bucaneer utility I bought from a neighbor. It came new with a 57 Johnson 35 tiller electric.
I'd like to put a 57 back on with a 40 hp power head.Do you think it is basically a bolt up switch and is it worth the effort?

Sorry but no.

The '57 does not have a thermostat. Powerhead is different than the 40hp.

What is wrong with the current powerhead?

I have a question regarding a '66 rdsl 28b. I am in the process of getting it running and have just realized that the one I bought does not have a generator/alternator. Can I add the generator or just a stator? Is it possible? I have not pulled the flywheel yet to see what's underneath.

You can add a generator if you choose. Easiest way is to find a blown motor with everything you need. Buying it piece by piece gets expensive.

The generator bolts up on the port side, towards the front of the motor. Those model years didn't come with alternators. Like HighTrim says, get a blown parts motor. It will be tough to find one with a generator though, eventhough finding one with a starter will be easy enough.

In your case steelspike, I would just get a '71 - '76 model 40. They're the single wall type, like the '57's are and still have the universal style ignition.

If it looks that good, it would be worth rebuilding a new powerhead for it. Eventhough there are lots of them motors still around, ones that look nice are getting hard to find.

Im not doubting you, as i have never tried it, but are you sure this would work? Base gaskets are different and Im not sure the bolt configuration is the same? Would like to make a 40hp sleeper Javelin though if its possible.

First of all, thanks for the "secret files". Seems to be very valuable for me. In the skeme fo things, is a generator really necessary for an engine like this? I assume the battery is used only for starting (obviously for lights etc. on the boat as well). When I was growing up, we skied behind a 14" runabout with a 40 hp westbend. I remember charging the battery the night before and we would go to the lake and run the boat until the battery started getting weak-then we would go home.

I think you would need the generator if you have electric shift, so the solenoid in the lower unit can be energized while underway. But yours is a mechanical shift, so I would say you're correct in not needing a generator.

I have a few Big Twins that I run almost daily in the summer that I dont have generators on. I dont really run at night, nor do I have a stereo or bilge pump or anything as they are on cedar strips. So really the battery is only used for starting. You would be surprised at how many starts you get on a charge, you may only need to charge it every month or so.

If you have shore power, you could plug in a smart charger when at dock.

OR, you could use a solar powered trickle charger. I use that on a couple of my boats and they work great. Not so good at charging a dead battery, but great for maintaining a battery and keeping it topped up. They are pretty cheap nowadays, I got a bunch of little ones at Canadian Tire for like 10 bucks each on sale.

Oh no, the powerhead won't mount up. But getting a complete motor was basically what I was getting at.

I kind of came to that conclusion. I'm going to mount the engine this weekend and get it all wired up. I found a voltage regulator and will continue my quest to find a generator if I can-kind of a challenge right now. I'll keep you posted on how I progress. My goal is to have this thing like new-both mechanical & cosmetic. I'll post some pix soon. Thanks.

I found what seems to be the exact OMC replacement-NOS- on ebay. $35 with shipping......
