Hi , thnks for looking at my Post

I have a '61 40Hp johnson outboard, the plugs fire out of the cylinder and I cleaned the carb today. The engine turns over but doesnt start. It has been in storage for a long time. New battery on it. Can anyone pls tell me what the problem could be  . Somone suggested it could be compression problems. If so could u tell me how to sort this and maybe send me any related diagrams to ribane@yahoo.com pls?

Pretty pls :)

Thanks everyone

After you crank it a few times pull the plugs and see if they are wet. It still sounds like a fuel problem. Put your reply on and we'll go from there.

Hi, Ribane.

Try squirting a bit of fuel mix into the carb before you try to start.

If that allows it to fire up for even a few seconds your trouble is that the carb is not supplying fuel.

That could be a plugged jet in the carb, bad fuel pump or fuel not getting to the fuel pump.

It could also be water in the fuel.

As I advised you in one of your other threads, get a manual. If you can't afford $30 for a manual, you can't afford to operate a boat.

Let us know what you find. :)

Hi thnks for info so far, now i have a manual :) .

Spraying mix into carb doesnt work. still get nogthing.

Pulled the flywheel and the coils r cracked and wire exposed. They will need replaced. Could this be the problem? Could they be damaged enough to spark outside of the cylinder but not good enough to spark under compression?. is this a rational assumption?
