The black cover on the prop that covers the nut....does it snap on/off or screw on/off? I need to remove the prop but not sure how this cover is removed so I can get at the nut.

Remove the cotter pin that goes through that plastic "nut," then just pull the plastic piece off. Next, remove the drive pin that goes through the prop and shaft. You can use a pin punch or a nail with the point cut off to push the drive pin out. Then, just pull the prop off. The pin holds the prop on and drives it, and the plastic "nut" is just there to keep the drive pin in place.

That's it. No threads; no screwing around. A very good system. Buy a couple of drive pins and a spare prop cap when you can. Use stainless steel cotter pins to hold that cap on.

BTW: In case you lose that cap, you can make a makeshift one from a PVC pipe reducer fitting that will fit over the drive pin area and the front. You just have to drill it for a cotter pin. You'll have to experiment at the hardware store. I can't remember what size would fit your outboard, but I used on on a 35 hp RDS-20 until I could get the proper part.

Thanks Cat, but the cap is a problem for me. I do not see anything holding it on, so I assume it either snaps on or screw on. Hate to just rip it off there and maybe tear it up, LOL.

There should be a cotter pin through the hole in the flats near the nose of that thing. Look closely. Now, it may have broken off somehow, but you'll still have to clear that hole all the way through before you can remove the cap.

The cotter pin is all that holds it on. It's a slip fit over the end of the prop shaft.

Once it's off, you'll see the drive pin through the prop sleeve and the prop shaft.

That's all there is to that prop and its attachment. So, look closely, and act carefully. The cap or "nut" is available, but may not be in stock at your local Evinrude dealer, so you don't want to ruin it. Get a spare. Seriously...plus a couple of spare drive pins.

Take another look.

The 5.5 has the rubber cap that COVERS the cotter pin. The cap pops off. Gentle persuasion with a blunt screwdriver will help. Don't pry too hard, as it is 50 year old rubber and will distort or crack if you're hard on it.

Oops. My bad. I was looking at the parts diagrams, rather than relying on direct experience. My '92 6hp has the other type of cap.

Thanks folks! The cap seems pretty soft yet, given it's age....will "carefully" pry it off when weather clears a bit! I wonder if the previous owner ever even had it off, given the sorry state of the lower unit screw/gaskets. They were on there so long they adhered to the LU and I have to scrape them off....oil looked like it was ancient.
