I have dropped a 1977 chev 400 sm block into a 1961 chev 3/4 ton pickup.

I need to change the oil, what do I put back into this pickup?

Should I just use what I've been using (10-30) syn tec? or should I use the old standard (10-30) reg. oil?
Thanks'
Spud

10-30 reg is what I would use , Syn is good too , But if you have any leaks at all with reg , Youll have many with the syn Ive found.

Spud, I likes to use Delo 15-40. I don't know that it's the best choice, but 310,000 miles on the pickup and it is running strong...knock on wood. ;)

10w40 and 15w40 are always really good choices in American iron. Old engines (mileage and technology wise) have much larger clearances than new engines, and thicker oil provides a better cushion between the parts.

That said, in real life you'd probably never notice any difference between 10w30 and 15w40. 10w40 is what I use in my '79 454, and 4.0 Jeep engine...they both love it.

Shorty and OZ are pretty much right on the money, but I dont like 10W-40s because of the Viscosity improvers needed to go fom a 10W to a 40W. Can cause sludge build up in some engines.. But if you have good luck with it then go for it I say. My vote is the 15W-40. I use Dello, but Im sure Wally Worlds diesel oil will do ya fine if you want to save a buck for fishin lures and such, its additive pack isnt what Dellos is, but we are counting straws here.

if you have run synthetic, they don't recomend going back to standard oil. the different bases of the two, are not compatible always and can leed to oil contamination and swelling of rubber seals. AKA, leaks.
put some brake fluid on and old set of wiperblades and see what happens after awhile (same thing with moter seals)

Pick a viscosity that corresponds to the temperatures you're going to see. Utah this time of year can be cold, so I would not use a 15W-40 oil. Brand and flavor are up to only you, but I see no reason not to use what you've been using (10W-30 syntec).

Caught me on this one. :p Dello also comes in a 10W-30 if you can find it.

Also I have to say that Castrol Syntec is a group III so why pay the group IV price. Use Mobil1 if you are going to use a synthetic. If you dont care about group III or IV, and you want a synthetic (Almost) Use the WalMart synthetic and save a buck.

Not wanting to hijack this thread, but since we are on the subject of whether 10W 30 synthetic motor oil can or cannot be used instead of the regular 10W 30 motor oil.
Allow me to share this experience.
I have an Infinity G35 coupe, it is classified as a high performance car.
This vehicle can achieve very high RPM's, it redlines at around 7000 rpm.
The dealership does all of the oil changes, they insist that i must always use the regular 10W 30 motor oil, and not a synthetic 10W 30. their only reason for this decision i'm told is, the manufacturer requires it to be so.
Therefore i take it to be that there is a difference after all, what that difference is i don't rightly know, perhaps it can be better explained to myself and others by the oil experts here.

Not really. Synthetic oil is better in almost every engine ever made. It's not always worth the extra cost, but it's almost always better. Likely the oil specifications for your car were made by the EPA and an accountant, not somebody that actually knows anything about oil or engines.

If I take my Jeep into the dealer to have the transmission fluid changed, they will insist on using Chrysler ATF+4. The tranny in my Jeep was not made by Chrysler, and the correct fluid is Dexron III. The use of ATF+4 almost always causes an early death; however, almost all dealers insist on using it. Most of them are too stupid to even understand that it goes against service manual specifications.

I'm having a tough time getting used to calling you Bassin' Fever, you will always be LubeDude to most of us here, you know that, don't you?

I exclusively use Mobil 1 synthetic oil is all of my vehicles, other than the one time that i acquired a carton of Royal Purple.
I am a bit baffled by the dealerships suggestion that the Manufacturer requires that only regular 10W 30 oil be used in this vehicle, BTW, they use Castrol GTX 10W 30.

Delo 400 also comes in 0W-30 and 5W-40 full synthetic.

Castrol Syntec is generally less expensive than group IV's. It isn't just a group III, it is a highly refined group III synthetic that exceeds the requirements of most vehicles.

The only thing the manufacturer recommends is a API category and viscosity.

Just because the courts say they can call it a synthetic doesnt make it one IMHO!!! I will say that its an excellent oil though.

We have had this discussion before though and no matter what you say you will not change my mind!

The courts didn't define what a "synthetic" is. The courts simply ruled that one oil company (Mobil) could not define what a "synthetic" oil was, which would've forced the rest of the oil makers to follow that oil company's definition of synthetic.

It would be like allowing Rapala to define "wooden lures" as only those they make with Balsa wood. Other companies making lures out of pine wouldn't be able to call their lures "wooden".
