When I'm cruising at full throttle my high speed mixture screw wanders around and affects performance. There's no friction left. Anyone know a quick fix for this?

Where can I buy said rebuild kit? Dealers up here are of little to no help with the old stuff.

Ok, I'm going to buck the tide, but I just don't understand why anyone should have to rebuild a carb for such a simple problem.

If the motor is running fine except for the "wandering" needle then I would just add a little packing to it until such time as the carb needs cleaning. I have also used a small o-ring for this exact problem and it works fine. Have you tried tightening the packing nut a little more?

I haven't tried anything, yet. I only had about two weeks to run it after I bought it before winter storage. I'll try what you suggest, I'd rather not tear it apart, yet. It works too good.

I agree. Just tighten the packing nut first. I like easy fixes. I have the exact same engine and I've had to really tighten the packing nut down on it.

The packing washers are available separately. You don't have to take the carb apart to replace them. Actually, they are nothing but washers cut from gasket material...you can make your own.

I have a 1959 johnson 18 horse that had the same issue. I chose a different solution to the problem. Being a plumbing contractor, I had some Poly ferrels ,1/4" if I remember correctly, that fit the bill perfectly. Haven't had a problem since. What I'm refering to are little "plastic" poly ferrels that are used to compress around tubing for a seal, in this case ice maker tubing. You don't want to use the brass ferrels just the poly ones!

Those packing washers are still being used on various models and should be available at any Evinrude or Johnson dealership. The part number is 307583. You would need no more than four of them.

I lieu of the packing material, I have used lighly greased COTTON thread, wrapped around the needle in the general area of where it will ride. Build it up a bit, no more than 1/32" thick, and maybe 1/16" wide. The grease will keep it in place and from unraveling while you reassemble it.

Teflon tape twisted into a thread and wrapped around the screw. tighten the packing nut, and it has enough friction to hold it in place. Rick

I've seen Teflon tapes turn to goo in the presence of the new gas formulations... That's why I recommended cotton thread...

Re: '61 Evinrude 18 high speed screw

I just used F-R's method to make some packing washers for a '63 evinrude 18hp I was fixing for a frat. brother. I used a single hole paper punch to make 3 holes in some fel-pro 1/16 gasket material I got at ABC auto parts and trimmed it in a circle. THe hole made by the single hole paper punch was IDEAL to make a nice tight seal around the shaft of the valve. As you guys already know, F-R is "THE STUFF"! His method worked great for me, as usual. I have used that gasket material to trace numerous gaskets out and cut them and they have never failed to make a good seal (also learned about here). I have tried some rubberized cork gasket material once and it STUNK- don't recommend it. MERRY CHRISTMAS--you guys on this forum have made the whole year a fun one for me. Since I am getting to do some work for friends on their old motors, the knowledge you've given me is helping them, too.

JBJ, while you might bemoan all the easy available old engines up here, you're the one that's still boating while we're skiing and skating up here in the sub freezing weather! I'd rather be boating! (hey, I think that's a bumper sticker!)

Yeah Samo,
I guess the grass is always greener.....But I sure would like to go ice skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling, rabbit hunting in the snow, coon hunting, DUCK hunting, etc. I know it would get old after too much of it but I LIKE cold weather. Sometimes I really consider moving up North but would miss my friends and home territory. Another thing I don't like is all the "NO TRESPASSING" signs and the fact that all the forests have been cut around here, and I do mean ALL of them. Enough griping, it is good fishin' here in the "winter". I got hot working on Jewel's motor in my short sleeve t-shirt today!:(
Merry Christmas,
JBJ
