My 5.5 has the old glass fuel bowl with an old filter still in it, but previous owner quit using it years ago and used a simple plastic one for lawn mowers, as these are obsolete items now as I understand it. I see NOS on ebay going for 15 bucks or so which seem excessive, and the filters have to be old anyway. Do any of you have another filter that will work from another motor, or have you did as this guy did, and just run a plastic one? Would like to run it as it was meant to be but maybe it;s no big deal.

What makes you think it is obsolete? If it is a 1961, it has the glass filter on the side of the powerhead. The filter element is part number 302062 and is available from any Evinrude dealer. List price is $12.41.

Hmmm, I have seen it listed as a NLA part on Ebay more than once, but I have not tried an Evinrude center as there are none near me. Guess not all folks are honest huh? Still, not sure if this is needed or if the lawnmower one would be adequate. Prevous owner used it that way but if it is better I will keep looking. I will check NAPA, they were able to hlep me on the lower unit washers on this motor and my 76' 55hp unit. Thanks!

At least as far as a small motor such as that is concerned, a filter is a filter is a filter. The gas doesn't know if it is a lawnmower or not.

Disclaimer: This does not apply on big gas guzzlers that have to let several gallons per hour through.
