I have an Evinrude 5.5 that I was running today in our "test barrell" and I was surprised at the amount of crud that remained afterward. I am new to boating and this may be normal but looks like these motors pollute a bit....I will d/c the lower unit in the morning but appears to be residue from running. The motor is running less than perfect...looks like I will need a carb rebuild soon as it is "loading up" a bit. Can run it, but I know it can run better. I have a parts book and owners manual but service manual for this motor is hard to find. I have worked with carbs before but not outboards, is this motor difficult to overhaul a carb on?

It's easy to overhaul the carburetor, but you need the repair kit to do it corrctly.

Unburned lubricating oil is a fact of life with two stroke carbureted motors, because you simply do not use all of the oil that is mixed in the gas while idling or trolling.

You can help to limit the problem by making sure that the thermostat is working properly and by using biodegradable TC-W3 (synthetic) oil.

Thanks, will switch to synthetic oil first chance I get. As for the carb I have found the kits (easier than I thought) but unsure how to get at it on this motor. I see it but my guess is I have to remove several other things to be able to remove it, such as the control / choke assy and so forth. I probably can muddle my way through it but will look around again for a service manual. My guess is this motor has need of new coil upgrade. impeller etc. anyway as it sat for a while before I bought it...and the previous owner did not maintain it properly...from the looks of the lower unit (old black oil and a ton of fishing line). I replaced it and replaced the plugs as well as the gas filter.
