I have a '62 v-4 75hp johnson. My problem is it dies out at full throttle. if I back it down to about half, it will stay running. I know it's not a fuel issue(i put an electric pump on it and had same problem). It had a mag system that gave me fits. So I put a differnt mag on it. The second mag died out in the barrel. Now i have a battery-ignition on it but have not had the boat on the water since do to recent back injury. does anyone think this will solve my problem of dieing out at full throttle and rough running after it runs for awhile

Not a very good idea to install an electric fuel pump, no way to control if a fuel line breaks or needle and seat fails. Sounds like you may have a high speed circuts in the carb. Has the boat been sitting for awhile?

Probably not. Besides, swapping complete systems only complicates things. Maybe your fuel pump is starving for fuel from the tank? Just a guess which is as good as any, I suppose.

I wonder how you went about changing to a battery igniton system.

Those motors as engineered from the factory were very good and dependable.

EDIT: Another guess--wrong float valve in the carburetor (too small)???

carbs were rebuilt. battery ign came off another motor of same generation. mine is a v4sl-14b the donor is v4a-14. I took the ele. pump off when i got back home after it did the same thing( cutout). thats when i put the other mag on. It gave out itn the barrel on me. Then thats when I put changed out the mag for the bat ign Got it running sounds better now messed up hip and back at work on 8-19-09 so haven't been able to take it out

carbs were worn out. got other carbs and it runs better now. (OH Sorry it took so long to respond been laid up all last fall and winter with back injury. just got that fixed in Feb.) now can work on boat again. rebuilt new carbs(used) had engine running pretty good was checking timing and the darn thing died and wont restart tries but wont think i got water in fuel atleast smells that way as for mag to bat ing switch i found a bat dist of same era eng and swapped them out ever thing hooked up and bolted up the same wasnt hard swap to do
