Hey Folks,

This engine has been great for me since i picked it up for a steal a few months ago.

Yesterday went out on the river with 4 people and the boat seemed gutless. i bet we couldn't get past about 10mph, never came close to planing out.

15' aluminum with about 700lbs of people. We were easily past by 13' fiberglass with four people and a 30hp. and i mean easily.

I checked the prop to see if it had spun, but i dont see any clear signs of it. i know the true way to test that, just havent yet.

I did notice some milky white oil puddling under the motor when we parked at our house again. about a teaspoon. I drained the lower end unit expecting to see the same color but was surprised to have a dark brown clearish oil come out. So now i do not know where this milky stuff is coming from.

tracing it, I found it in two holes. pictures are attached. Wondering what they do, and if that's where it came from, or just got stuck into the hole and that' where i noticed it.

ok, when i went to take some pictures i noticed this under the shift linkage plate. its the same color as the material i am seeing leaking out. good/bad/expected?

in the second picture of the holes. only the middle one seems to have leaked. you can see the residue on the lower end below it.

Appreciate all the help!

Thanks,IMG-20130902-00298.jpgIMG-20130902-00301.jpgIMG-20130902-00302.jpg

Hi Steve. Those holes are factory drain holes and the milky stuff is just exhaust gas and water mixed together. It's perfectly normal. As for the loss of speed, that could be a few things. You didn't say what hp your motor is, but it sounds like it's a 35-40hp. A 4 person load is probably the absolute max for that hull and motor combo. The weight distribution within the hull can drastically influence the performance as well. If the other boat's f'glass hull was lighter to start with and carrying a lighter load with a late model motor, it may well outperform you. Modern motors measure their hp at the prop, whereas vintage motors did so at the powerhead. As a result, a vintage 30hp is closer in power and performance to a modern 25hp. You may also want to confirm spark and compression on both cylinders for good measure as well. These old girls can run surprisingly well on only one can.

Thanks kfa4303,

That puts my mind at ease, and yes you are correct it is a 40HP 1962 evinrude fast twin. the other boat was a yami 30Hp 1982.

Its my neighbour. I have raced him a few times. never had an issue kickin his butt.

When just myself in the boat i clocked in at 39-45KM/H (30MHP?)

And in the past i have had three people in the boat, and could plane it out in about 25 feet or so. Something seems to have changed. knowing its not the lower end is a big relief !

in the spring I rebuilt a 69 Johnson 40HP for my other boat. So i have a pretty good idea on how this motor should run. it's just not there.

again, Thanks for the info!

Yeah, that sounds about right. Those 80s-90s model (25-30hp) Yami 2-strokes happen to be little screamers too. One of my dream motors is an early 90s, 2-stroke, 30hp, 3-cylinder, tiller drive Yami. They're very sought after down here in FL for flats skiffs due to their relatively light weight, power and reliability especially the Enduro models. Your 40hp Big Twin is probably closer in power to a modern 30-35hp motor, but it has a lot more low end grunt than the Yami, which is handy for pushing a heavy load, or pulling a skier. Plus, all hulls seem to have a point at which their speed is noticeably reduced due to weight. I know I can carry 1 extra adult and a kid without much loss in performance, but if I carry 2 adults and myself, it's quite noticeable. The Yami also has a lot more prop options at its disposal. He may have a go-fast prop on his motor to help him eek out a few more mph as well.
