There is a cam that the points ride on, you set 1 set of points and then rotate the crankshaft until the cam lobe is under the other set of points and then set the 2nd set of points.
Both sets of points will NOT be open or closed at the same time.

The points are normally closed, the points open via a cam that has a bump in it so to speak. You should see the word "top" which will help you get it setup, turn the crank until the points open at their highest point and set them to .020, do the samel to the opposite cylinder.

Can i turn the crankshaft by hand, or do i have to slip the flywheel on each time to rotate it? I think it would be hard to see with the flywheel on.

Put the nut on the flywheel to the bottom of the crank and use a wrench/socket to turn it.

Okay that makes sense. I will try to get everything adjusted correctly tonight and check my idle again before going out this weekend. I really appreciated all the help and will keep you posted once i run the engine this weekend.

Yeah this motor is surprisingly easy to work on, very simple but a real paint in the butt sometimes. Very touchy sometimes.

Thanks again!

Okay...

I reset the points properly, at least as far as i could tell, and regaped the plugs as well. Then i couldn't really get the motor to idle. It kept dying. Then finally it wouldn't start.

I think what happened is that the motor sucked up a bunch of gunk from my fuel tank, as the fuel pump dish had about half of it full of some black goop. So i am sure that the carb is clogged and probably the fuel pump. I guess i'll pull them off and take a look tonight.

Re: 62' Johnson 28 hp RXL-10

I put a carb rebuild kit in today, i still need to work with it, i'm not sure i put my packing gaskets in the high speed and low speed valves, but that shouldn't be hard to correct. I did find my speed problems...i think. The shift lever for fwd, reverse, and neutral is not working properly.

When the boat is in neutral or reverse the lever that goes up into the engine compartment keeps the plate that the coils, condensors, and points set on from moving past about 1/2 throttle. WHen the lever is in the fwd position it should move out of the way of the plate and allow the plate to rotate into the full throttle position, however it doesnt. The metal rod that rides along the shift lever in the engine compartment is a little worn and the rod that goes into the upper lower unit moves in and out and the rod will not move properly. I am going to see what i can rig up to free the plate when the throttle is opened up to full. ANy suggestions. If this made any sense to anyone. Kinda hard to explain...

THanks!

But understandable. If it is fully in forward gear, the lockout lever should no longer be limiting the spark advance/throttle. Don't "rig" something up, find and fix the problem. If it is not going fully into forward gear you will soon have other problems. $$$$problems.

The rod that goes into the uppler lower unit seems to work just fine, i have never had problems with it shifting in and out of gear, it is that upper lever assembly that is not working properly. I need to adjust the lever peice that hooks to the control cable so that when turned it will move the upper lever out of the way so that plate can rotate to full throttle.

Re: 62' Johnson 28 hp RXL-10

I took the boat to a small lake nearby to test out my handiwork on the motor. What a difference!!! Never even hesitated, started right up and then off we went! There are some Muskies in this lake so i threw in some rods just in case everything work, and i even trolled around the lake for about an hour and not even a hickup with the motor idling around the lake.

My boat is a 14' aluminum Crestliner V Hull and i took all my decking seats and flooring out to redo it and clean the boat. I don't have a speedometer but that little boat was flying!! I think when i get a little more weight in the bow things will work awesome. THanks for all the help guys!!
