I have recently purchased a 1962 johnson 28hp engine. WhenI bought it it ran fine, but after a few trips on the lake it has started to give me a few problems. When the engine is out of gear it runs and accelerates great. However if you put it in gear and load the engine it will not accelerate to full rpm. I have cleaned the carb and changed it's seals and gaskets. I have tried to adjust the HP misture but nothing changes. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?

A story heard over and over. It's running on one cylinder. Fix the ignition system. That is, After you check the compression to make sure the engine is healthy.

I found a broken hose running from the crank case to fuel pump. changedit and she runs great! any ideas on what the fuel ratio should be for this engine? I'm told 50:1

There shouldn't be a hose from the crankcase to the fuel pump on that motor. Vacuum/pressure pulses come from a hole in the upper bypass cover, directly into the the back side of the fuel pump. The only hoses should be from the fuel connector on the port side of the motor to the fuel pump, and from the fuel pump to the carb.

The hose that you describe sounds more like the one that connects to the vacuum cutout switch. Being disconnected, however, should not make the motor run poorly, as it should just prevent the switch from working. On the other hand, if there is problem with the switch, it might short out the ignition for the lower cylinder, thereby causing the problem as FR described.

I'm not a doctor, but I play one in my driveway. I had those same symptoms this morning on the bay. I came home and found that she was only going on one cylinder. Fixed it. Dropped her back in the bay this evening and did 20kts for an hour straight. My 1980 35hp Johnson sounded great on one cyl too!!! Just wouldn't move me very fast in gear. Listen to Dr. F_R.'s advice.

Yep, I had an old (1968) 6 that would rev until it blew on one cylinder. Put it in gear and it would lug like I was pulling a house. Cleaned the points and off she went. Certainly sounds like a single cylinder issue!

your fuel / oil ratio is 24/1, the change to 50/1 was for the 1964 motors. use full synthetic tc w3 outboard motor oil, and it will not smoke as bad.
