my 75 hp johnson electric shift was running great . the boat it was on wasnt much good so after i had it running good i moved it to a better boat .it ran ok after the switch in tank i was going to lake to test it today and now it wont start. it started for a few mins. then kind of sputtered and died now it wont start at all it just back fires some and nothing else. it does have spark on all four pluggs . I cleaned them and put them back in.I tried again with the same results. They were kind of dirty the first time .I pulled them a second time after i tried to start they seemed clean with just a little fuel on them. thanks for any help.

spray premixed gas into the carbs, not starter spray.

it sure could, and while there check the condition of coils, points and condensers. pull the fly wheel. you need a harmonic balancer puller, #8 harden bolts and washers. i think, but don't hold me to it, you need 5/16 X 20 bolts. the smaller motors are 1/4 X20.

thanks for info . this motor has belt driven distibuter.the points look to be in good shape. if key was broke would fly wheel turn with motor . i turned it by hand to check timing .and everything seemed to be ok . thanks for any other help.

So you checked the belt timing? Yes, a sheared flywheel key will throw it out of time and yes the flywheel will still rotate...unless it is loose as a goose. When installing the flywheel, the shaft and flywheel tapers must be clean and dry and the nut torqued to 70-85 ft/lbs with a torque wrench. Anything else invites a sheared key and probably damage to the tapers.

I assume the key is in the distributor pulley? Anybody would have to be pretty dumb to leave that one out.

Did you lift the motor using the handle on top of the recoil starter? Possibly when you had the cover off something got bumped. Before you pull the flywheel why don't you check the timing. Maybe the distributor belt got moved one tooth either way of where it should be. Is the distributor tight?

Re: 62 johnson 75 hp

checked timing again seems to be ok but book is kind of confusing. it says to line up mark on fly wheel with mark on top of head and to line up mark on distibuter with switch on plunger . there is a red colored mark on distibuter is this the right mark ?the mark is on the cog gear itself. thereis also a mark on body of distibuter itself it kind of looks like an arrow does it need to be lined up with something? there is also a lot of fuel leaking from exauhst when i tried to start it but the pluggs are almost dry and dont really smell of gas .thanks for any help

OK, I get confused too. I was thinking it was the switch button as a timing mark, but just looked it up. Here is what it sez:

If it was running good and all you did was switch boats and/or switch tanks, I would consider the fuel in the tank to be suspect. Moving it to another boat shouldn't affect the timing. Since you had the plugs out, are you sure the plug wires are on the correct plug?

Remove the 7/16" hex bolts from the front lower portion of the carburetor and drain that fuel into a glass container. Also pum,p some fuel into a glass container fromthe tank you mention.

From what I gather, you were okay until you switched to anothe tank/boat. Water in the fuel would be my first thought.

In the glass container, if water exists, it will show at the bottom as it is heavier than gasoline/oil.

Re: 62 johnson 75 hp

thanks for replies i should have stated that tank is same one just a 6 gal portable. sorry about that but i did take line from fuel pump to carb loose and had wife turn over motor to see if pump was working . it seemed to pump plenty of fuel but looked like dirt in the bottom of container . the tank , hose ,and fuel are new . i think fuel is getting to cylinder because of raw fuel running out of exhaust when i try to start. Thanks for pics on timing that is what i have lined up right now .my book says this is process for battery ing. and for magneto ing. you line up flywheel the same but for distibuter you line up mark with safety switch plunger im not shure which one i have .the book i have says they used both but now how to tell the difference. thanks for any help
