Pulled the LU apart last night.....and bad news.

The pinion gear was chewed up with pieces of every tooth in the case. It sounded like a rattle before I opened it, so I new it wouldn't be good. Amazingly, the drive gears were OK and it had been running flawlessly. I guess the pinion was softer to "save them" much like a car starter. The DS upper seal was in bad shape but the shaft wasn't damaged at that point. However, the brass bushing at the bottom was terrible and the drive shaft was badly grooved. I'm guessing this play caused the gear to get chewed up.

So I'm on the hunt, looking for at least a pinion gear. It seems like there have to be a lot of motors that used this same pinion. Anyone have any info on compatible motors? Maybe I can find a better shaft to reduce the play and I'll definitely get a LU seal kit.

If I can't find a pinion gear, I'm going to replace the seals, bolt it back up and run it until it stops!!!! Hopefully, good oil with no water could get me through the summer...although I'd be nervous everytime I went out!!!

I believe an LU from virtually any other OMC 10hp built after the mid '50s will work. I would check around your local boat mechanics. They may have one in a junk pile some where. These litle 10hp pop up all over the place. An LU from a Johnson, Eveinrunde, of Gale should all work. You may also want to check 9.5 or 9.9 hp models. I'm not sure if they used the same pinion gear, but it may be worth a shot. I would also suggest you replace the seals in th elower unit while you have it apart. They're cheap ($35 or so), pretty easy to install and will seal up the LU tight as a drum. Lots of good links here on how to replace the seals. I would recomend a seal puller too. They make life way easier. You can get one for about $8 at Harbor Freight, and they're worth every penny. Keep us posted.

No doubt you checked the price of a new pinion gear...wow.. as far as compatability goes..just for the pinion..it looks like your d/s is a splined fit...on a 1958 10 hp....the d/s was a heated fit < don't know the proper term> to the pinion gear..no splines or key..just something to consider when calling around

I actually found a pinion on ebay for $28, listed as part # 307752, but it appears to be splined when mine is just a press fit. Too bad because that one was actually new old stock!!!

Thanks for the info kfa4303. I'm going to measure the DS, count the pinion teeth and broaden my search!

You have a modle number of that motor? I found 5-6 on ebay just a quick search, saw the 28$ one then there is a 59$ one.Thing is their all splined.BPR lists that DS as splined for a 1962 anyway.

I got courious and looked it up,in 1960 two pinions are listed depending on serial numbers (must be the change year) your pinion part# is 304009 the later pinion is 307752
Part 23 and 54 here http://www.marineengine.com/parts/v...evinrude-johnson/ITEM_3037/ITEM_303700001.htm

It's a QD 21 or 23....I forget right now. The current one is definitely not splined. There were a couple listings on ebay for like $80!!!!!

I really think the wear on the brass bushing is what caused the DS and pinion to rock around and explode, meaning the replacement will not last forever. I just want to get it back in the water for the summer. I'll probably sell it next spring and get something bigger.

Yah and I'll also bet it was the brass bushing that woreout it should be replaced or it will do it again soon
Heres your pinion 35 bucks check it out at ebay type in Johnson evinrude pinion #304009 then search you'll see two of them

Anybody know if a 58 Johnson 10hp lower is compatible? It is a QD19 and mine is a QD23.

I've been comparing them for the past 30 minutes. They look interchangable to me as well, however, some part #'s are different despite "appearing" the same in the diagrams. I know that doesn't mean anything. But the change in part # could just reflect a change in supplier. I wish I could find a part # cross reference to iron this out!!!!!

Here's a pic of the watery oil that prompted me to open the lower unit.

I know that exhast and water make some slime.....but is this normal????? Is it the result of the 24:1 ratio?

And.....here is the gearset. Notice that all 15 pinion teeth are present in the chunks!! Also notice that the drive gears are completely undamaged. The prop shaft, clutch dog and shift linkage are also in great shape, which I find amazing.

Thanks to Zephyr, I've source a good lower unit and pinion gear. My registration came in the mail yesterday and I can't wait to get this thing sealed up and in the water. A seal kit and tube of 3m 847 is also ordered. I'll post some pics next weekend when it's complete.

Re: 62 Johson - 10hp Lower Unit trouble

I got the lu back together tonight and ran into a problem. Once the skeg was on, I could barely turn the prop shaft! I pulled it off and everything was properly assembled and it spins fine in my hand. Any ideas?

Also, how tight should the pinion fit on the shaft? The new one just slides on and off without any effort.

check the little pin in the forward gear bushing and lower unit. Make sure that pin isn't squashing the bushing

Will do. I thought I had it lined up, but since it barely protrudes I may have misaligned it. When I redo it tonight, I need to use less sealant....I have a tendency to go overboard and I don't want gasket chunks blocking oil flow.

Yea, I think someone in the past may have misaligned it and pushed it further down. Might have to use a marker to mark where it goes, in relation to the housing.

That makes sense. I noticed the same thing on the original LU and even tried to pull the pin out. I couldn't even grip it though.
