I just got a 1962 evinrude Lark IV 40 hp. It starts and idles great but drops off in power when you gun it. Low range and mid have good throttle response but once you go any further it just doesnt go any higher. Could I have a problem with the fuel system ie. pump, carb, filters, tank, or could it be more of an ignition problem, like with the points or conds. Dutch

well Dutch, it could be one or all of them. seeing you just got the motor, i would do a compression check, spark check. there is an inspection plate on top of the flywheel, remove the recoil, and inspect the coils, condenser, and points. spark plug wires, if the coils are discolored, or cracked, time to replace them. they get hot and fail. that is a super strong motor, and easy to work on. fuel ratio is 24-1, not 50-1. if the coils look like this the are toast.
