I have a 1962 Mercury 700 70hp motor, the coils are shot and i noticed they looked like automotive style coils. Can i put some vibration-less coils on it and call it a day, i did that when i rebuilt my old OMC motor and that worked well. Also can i put better carbs on this motor to open it up alittle?

The coils are still available for this motor, I dont know about using an automotive type.
Marineengine dot com has them,
Mercury part number 898253T24
Sierra part number 18-5433

As far as the carbs are concerned, There is a lot more to "Opening" her up than just carbs. First step to getting her to breath more is Porting the block. Randomly changing the carbs leads to blown motors due to carbon build up or oil starvation.
