The motor in question is my 1962 5.5hp Evinrude. I have recently taken it apart to get it running correctly.

  • I rebuilt the Carberator with a kit, and replaced the float.
  • Fuel filter bowl assembly throughly cleaned.
  • I removed the powerhead and replaced the exhaust gasket.
  • I installed a new waterpump and thermostat.
  • I blew compressed air through all fuel (carb) and water passages.
  • I regapped and cleaned the points.
  • Head Cover was removed, gasket replaced
  • Spark plugs are brand new.
  • High and Low speed Needles were adjusted per the Joe Reeves method.

I now have everything back toogether. The motor runs really well from just past "start" on the throttle to WOT. The problem I have is that it wont start unless the throttle is almost fully advanced, and if I throttle down to near the "start" position it will begin to hiccup and die. It sounds to me more like a miss than a cough. It doesnt seem like much I do to the low speed needle will affect this.

My troubleshooting leads me to believe this is an issue of bad coils. I think that my spark is probably weak, and wonder if it is intermitant enough at idle that it would cause it to be so rough and not to want to run that low. I reseated the coils because they were draging on the flywheel, but I didnt replace them.

It looks to me now that I look harder that the top coil in the picture is beginning to crack, the bottom is difficult to determine in the pics.

Does it sound like I am on the right track?

yep. while you are that far, if it were me for $70 at laingsoutboards.com replace it all, including wires & shipping. then you know it's all good. besides they are probably 45 years old.

I have a few packages of new condensers to throw in. I also have like 3-4 sets of spark plug wires laying around to swap out.

I wish I didnt have to work today........I just replaced the brown coil with one that is not new but hasnt been used off a spare ignition I have laying around. The whit coil looks ok, but I dont have another good spare laying around.....want to try it with that one new coil first to see how it runs.

I pulled it over a few times just now......it finally doesnt move the throttle when the flywheel spins...........so hopefully I am not dragging a coil anymore.

Thanks again tashasdaddy. Help is always appreciated. I love these old motors, but am still learning more and more about them everyday.

when you set the coils the front edge set in line with the ridge they set on. perfect alignment.

Silly question: Will the coils dragging do anything to weaken the spark or affect it?? Or is it just going to affect stator base wobbling and throwing off the throttle?

Re: 62' Rude Carberator/Coils tune-up question.

The new coil seems to have helped a lot. It will run A LOT smoother now. The issue I have is that it will run really well from high throttle right down to just a hair past start on the throttle. Then it will die. I have it idling pretty nicely right down to that point in nuetral. I am wondering if I installed the throttle (part that slides through lower pan and meshing with gears on throttle arm and moves the armature) 90 degrees incorrectly, which I think (I stress that) if I rotated would put the actual start position on the handle just past point where I can get it to run. Maybe then the spot on the throttle I am expiriencing is the Stop position in acutality. (Butterfly doesnt quite fully open which I think this would solve as well)

The markings on the handle are rarely correct. The throttle gears and shaft assemblies have one large tooth. If they are aligned, OK. Then where the horizontal gear meets the verticle one, the first tooth goes in the first notch. Then that is OK. Mot much left except the carb throttle lever is to just barely begin to open the butterfly when aligned with the line on the cam under the armature plate.

I must havt that shaft in wrong then, because when I turn the throttle counterclockwise towards WOT the gears pop out and the armature stops moving (before getting to WOT) The when you turn the thottle the other way the gears bind up and you cannot.

Hopefully I will have time to look at this tomorrow. This is tough to explain lol
