I own a 1962 Gale manufactured Sea King 15HP outboard. A few days ago I ordered quite a bit of parts from marineengine.com. All parts fit but this head gasket. As I compare this head gasket to the old one it is about 1/8" bigger in all directions. This model shares parts with OMC outboards (Evinrude/Johnson) of the same vintage and I was aware some parts may not fit.

The existing gasket and gasket ordered are definitely from the same manufacturer, same logo is stamped and a four digit number is stamped near the logo. The existing head gasket is stamped 3051 and the part sent was 3138. I imagine the gasket sent was for an 18hp motor because there was no 15hp motors made by Evinrude or Johnson in 1962. Pictured is the ordered gasket sitting on top of the existing gasket. You can see the size difference. Can someone help me find this gasket?

Model number - GG18737C
Year - 1962

Parts ordered were from part catalog 15D13W which is a match to Sea King motors. Head gasket ordered from marineengine.com is part number 203247. Possibly they sent the wrong part? I sent an email to check.

There's a likely chance that the head gasket was mis-labeled. I had this happen to me in the past. Maybe you can match your head gasket to that of a 1956 Johny/Rude 15 and see if they are the same. If I'm not mistaken, the 15 had a slightly smaller displacement than the 18. Your new head gasket, may likely be that of an 18.

I think Zephyr is on to something. I think your engine is related to the Johnny FD-10 15HP engine of 1956, 19.94 cubic inches. The next year, 1957, the FD-11 was 18HP and 22 cubic inches.

You may have mistakenly been sent the head gasket that would have fit the FD-11.

Good luck.

Yep, that's what I'm thinkin JB. He's got the 19.94 cube motor. Basically a 22 cube is a 19.94 cube motor that was put on the copier and blown up about 10%. Johny/Rude stopped the 19.94 in '56, but Sea King continued them.

Re: 62 Sea King - need help finding head gasket

I replaced the head gasket on my 1962 Gale about 34 years ago and I think it was that of a 1958 15 hp evinrude. Verify the part numbers if possible just so I won't misslead you. By the way, my 62 gale 15hp has no model number on it as the yoke was replaced, taking the model plate with it. I need a repair manual. Will any 1962 15hp gale manual do? There are so many models that correlate with the manual for that year, I don't know what the differences are. Thanks to anyone that can help. I also need a head gasket, coils, and a water pump kit, don't know where to locate these items these days. Outboard dealers all but laugh at me when I ask. Thanks.

Here is the power head parts list for the 1962 Gale 15hp. What is the model number listed on your motor so we can verify for sure it is a 1962 15hp Gale/Seaking

Here is the parts diagram for the 1956 15hp Fastwin. (last year 15hp was made until 1974) The head gaskets are the same number of 203247 for the fastwin 15hp and the gale 15hp.
