Won't start without ether. Won't idle low and dies after 3 seconds when you idle high. The carb is real clean although the float itself is original and looks it. New gaskets and the float needle looks good. Readjusted the high and low jets 3/4 turn like the manual says. I noticed that when I squeeze the primer bulb bubbles come out from around the fuel line where it goes into the fuel filter. Also the fuel line into the carb does not have a clamp around it. Could my problem be caused by lack of pressure and not enough fuel getting into the carb? I also replaced the gasket in the fuel filter with a homemade version - could the hole pattern in the new gasket not be right and be an issue? Maybe a choke issue? Maybe flooding - how do you know if too much fuel or not enough?

2 things I can suggest: Repair air leak in fuel assembly and DO NOT use ether to try and start it(Very Bad) Washes down the Cylinders so there is no oil present! Mix proper oil/fuel mixture in a spray bottle and try that. You may also check into that Gasket deal and see if it is correct.

EDIT: Also do compression test!

A Carb rebuild kit would be best!! That way you have new parts in there and that minimizes problems! Dealer or West Marine or NAPA should have one!

Your mixture settings are starting points.
Turn in gently to bottom then highspeed out 3/4 turn, idle speed out 1 1/2 turns.Once warmed up
set high speed under load to best, then slightly toward rich. Then set idle to best under load.
Be sure the carb is getting a full supply of gas and that all passages and jets are clean.

SteelSpike is on track about your initial carb settings...idle should be 1 1/2 turns...not 3/4 turn, as indicated in your original post.

Where did you get your 'initial set up' #'s from?

I got my numbers from the gale manual I ordered from Ken Cook. I believe it said 3/4 turn but could be wrong... it was gettin' late. I'll double check my initial mixture settings and check/replace the fuel lines. What about points/coils and all that mess? Is this fairly sure to be a fuel problem? What next if the fuel mixture settings and fuel lines don't fix it?
